I wouldn't say they are a waste of time, I would say that just because one has a custom playing cue doesn't give them any advantage over a good quality production playing cue. Those with a love of quality artistic playing cues enjoy custom cues for their artistic look. It's what makes them feel good I guess, and that's okay.

That’s your opinion, which you’re entitled to of course. Aren’t you the guy with the Grinch case and predators the colors of Xmas tree balls? Many would think those are a waste of money, not to mention being butt ugly. The moral of the story is everyone’s different and likes what they like. 🤷🏻‍♂️

I believe that if you give any decent cue enough time to adjust and get used to it, it’ll play great.
I got to switch quite a few cues in a rather short period of time ad I own about 20 cues, I’ve used a 314-2 shaft on all of them, so they all play the same, yet they all feel different. My favorite was a Carmeli 8 points cue.

There are plenty of reasons to not buy a custom cue, makers who screw customers, long wait times, expense (not really anymore, when you kitty cues and messes selling for over 2k).

To say they are junk is ridiculous. There are plenty that are not great, but a decent custom has more attention to detail than any mass produced cue. Better materials are likely being used in customs, and there is the potential that you can contact the person who made the cue and actually cares about the cue.
 
If I'm understanding the topic without wading through 12 pages of posts......I'd say Rick Howards is one of the best cuebuilder/players I ever saw. Even saw him matching up on the stream this last Derby and hitting 'em good for a 70+ year old man. Appeared to be in great shape.

none of these things make a custom play better than a production that could be 100 percent composite for all i care
it just makes it cost more

I know Andy moved his shop to Florida a few years ago. J&J still has some of his cues in stock. They are excellent players and give you a lot of cue for the money. He uses a pantograph for his inlay work and can make custom builds as fancy as you want. I had the cue in my signature and avatar made in 2005, and it is still dead straight with a sweet hit despite its age.
