Best Pool Room in Jackson MS area?

Thanks d_flash......
I posting it would be great.....
and did you see my review of Reed Pierces new place?

Rep for your continuing efforts.....................................

sorry for not posting November tourneys, they didn't get the flyers out til time to play (they're like that, keeps competition away...LOL). were not my kind of tourneys; one was partners, other was Jack-n-Jill.

have got a tourney this weekend, Dec. 8th, 9-Ball, race to 5, $30 entry + calcutta, starts at 4pm, goes til it's over...lol.

bring some buddies and kick some ass. I'm going to Grenada on Tues and try to convince some of the Sports Center sharks to come down and play.

I'll most likely be there to see who I can beat. :p

The reason the owner of Van Winkle, Bobby Headrick, didn't tell you about Reed's place is that Reed's is competition to his place. Bobby is not a bad guy but very tight with the $$$. He used to play fairly well and ran with Larry Hubbart when Larry was down south.

I am new to the Jackson MS area, and haven't found any good Pool Rooms..
I was told by the Owner of Van Winkles rec room, that the Jackson area doesn't have tournaments... only a few bar table leagues...
I find it hard to believe that a city of 400,000+ ppl doesn't have a decent pool room...

I have been to the Green Room..... Kind of a joke IMO
they charge a $50 fee to play on 1 of 4 nine foot tables..
plus $8 per player per hour... talk about steep!!!!!!!!!!!!

I would love to hear from anyone who knows where the best rooms are...
TY Nate

There are a few tournaments at the smaller bars in town, I'm in the process of tracking them all down at the moment. Action rooms are Van Winkles (almost always bar tables) and the Green Room, (bar table and 9' action). As far as the $50 fee, you must be talking about a membership. The bartenders that don't know you will tell you that you have to have a membership to play on the diamonds (3 of the 4 9'-tables), but if you come in a few times and get to know the owner (Mara or Truett) that won't happen any more. This keeps the bangers off of the action tables, and keeps them free for when there is some action. I also believe that the rate isn't correct either, but it is pretty close. If you do pay the $50 membership fee, you get 30% off all your pool time, and all your pool time before 6 or 7 on Sundays is free.

Van Winkle's is in a little shadier side of town, but if you want action and you can handle playin' on bar tables, they will give you all the action you can handle. From 5 a game all the way up to your paycheck.

Reed's in Byram (as you have found) is the best room in the area, but it's a few miles out of the way, I have yet to go in there when there were any "players". (Other than Reed of course, but I have yet to see him pick up a cue, even to return it to the rack).

Bobby was very nice, i enjoyed his stories... But I can't see anyone thinking that Reed's place and Bobby's place are competitors...

IMO they are two totally different businesses... Bobby's place is a pool room with a split crowd of gamblers and people only there to horse around...

Reed's place is more like an upscale Sports bar that just happens to have a few pool tables...

And they are 30 minutes from of each other... (unless i'm going the wrong way) :D

I would be more likely to go into Bobby's to play pool than to Reeds.....
If I wanted to have a drink and watch football, then Reeds would get the nod..

Just My Opinion

When i was in Van Winkles they were betting on anything... LOL

But they were also sharking each other and acting a fool,while gambling...
If I am going to gamble, it will only be with respectful people....

As for the Tournaments... I don't really play on Bar Tables at all... So pool here may be pointless... I refuse to drive an hour just to play...

Lacy's Lounge

There is also action at Lacys Tavern Inc, 4586 Clinton Blvd. Lacy is called "Rerun", he is a black guy with a ton of class and a ton of gamble. His place is a mixed crowd with no problem getting out with the money if you take it off.

But by far the best action spot in Jackson is the Green Room in north Jackson. Mara, who runs the place is a very classy lady and as has been said, the $50 is just a deterent to keep the bangers off the action 9' Diamond tables. You do not have to pay it to play. All the tables in the place are well kept. When you walk in ask for Mara, tell her the $Bill sent you. You will be pleasently surprised.

I don't think so, Nate, though I would love to. I'm still not able to get around as well as I should after surgery a month ago. There are now at least 6 players in it, including,

1 - Grady Mathews;
2 - Richard "Pelican" Lowell;
3 - Harold "Smackmac" McAbee;
4 - Justin Cone;
5 - Jerry Slivka; and
6 - Nic Vita.
ONLY 2 SPOTS LEFT!!!
