Best Pool room near Lowell, MA

I'm sorry to say but there are really slim pickins around here these days. Here are my recommendations:

Reflections Lounge (downstairs from the former Country Club USA):
978-934-9325, 67 Parkhurst Rd. Chelmsford, MA.
There are 3 GCIV's. They are in adequate shape, Simonis cloth and Centennial balls. The cloth is a bit worn, and the tables play slow. Oddly they don't have the centennial cue balls anymore. Instead they are some crappy really light cue balls. If you own a blue circle or super aramith or something, bring it. There is no smoking. The room is clean and quite during the day, and most weekday evenings, but is a little annoying on the weekend nights with a DJ and lots of kids. Not too bad overall.

Grand China Restaurant and Billiards, Salem, NH:
7 Veterans Memorial Parkway, Salem, NH 03079 Tel: 603-893-9124. gcbilliards.net
This has become my home room lately. They have 8 Brunswick Centurion tables (the model below the GC). They are in nice shape with Simonis cloth. They play reasonably fast. Nice Centennial balls with the correct cue balls. Very pleasant atmosphere. Not really an action room, but there are some decent players that show up. The room is usually pretty full on the weekend nights, but it is still pretty comfortable. The owner Dharma is a great guy. I forgot to mention that this is a Chinese restaurant. The food is very good. They were actually featured in Billiards Digest Top 10 pool rooms a couple of years back. The tables by the way are 8' pro (8 1/2 foot). I would recommend this place if it isn't critical that you play on a 9 footer.

World Class Billiards, Peabody,MA.
82 Newbury Street Peabody, MA 01960-3806 (978) 535-7000
Played there a few times. They have about 10 tables in nice shape. About 60% GC's and the rest Diamonds (the older style of Diamond's commercial tables, not the ProAM...I think they are old Diamond Professionals). You would be most likely to find players and light action here. All 9' tables in good shape. They have a very reasonable special during the day, like 8 bucks or something to play from 12-6. They also have a few nice 3C tables if you're up for that.

That's all I can think of nearby. Peabody is a bit of a hike from Lowell, maybe 35 min or so. Grand China is more like 20 min. Chelmsford is practically right there.

PM me if you are looking for someone to play with.

Hope this helps,

From Lowell, you can reach a few other places:

North
Maxamillian's in Tyngsboro, MA (near New Hampshire border)

Slightly closer to Lowell than Boston Billiards in Nashua. Wednesday nights are league nights, but there's a chance you could play as a sub.

South
World Class in Peabody, MA

I'll second that nomination, especially if you want to play carom. You shouldn't have a problem scaring up a game of 9-ball there.

Southwest
The Billiards Cafe in Ayer, MA

Has the only 12' snooker table in New England accessible to the public. Nicely decorated, fairly quiet room. I think there may be a league on Wednesday nights.

Can't believe I forgot this. Nice GC's in good shape. A bit pricey, but they have a pretty good daytime deal I think...get lunch and pool is free from like 11-3 or something.

If you are wanting really close and lounge atmosphere I would say Boston Billiards in Nashua. If you are looking for action I would go to World Class. Otherwise, I would say Grand China in Salem, NH like Kerry said. Friday & Saturday nights usually have some of the regulars hanging around and it is a nice laid back crowd. I don't think that they open until 4pm and the regulars usually start strolling in about 6pm. PM me if I can be of some help.

Wow! Thanks for letting me know. I'll check it out soon.

We have a Snooker Ladder going in Ayer, so maybe we could arrange some Ayer vs. Clinton matches. Here's the thread about the snooker ladder:

Maybe too much of a stretch from Lowell, but you may want to check out the new Snookers in Providence, RI. Was in the top 10 in Billiards Digest this year and has great food and nice tables. It also has a great selection of brews. It's really only about an hour away or so (69 miles according to Mapquest, heh) from Lowell. Say hi to Mike Webb if you see him and give him a couple of dog biscuits to take home for his pups. :)
