Best Weekend Tournaments In The U.s.

JoeyA you might want to skip Grady's tournament... me and easy-e will be there and we have 1st & 2nd place locked! :D But you should come to cheer us on and possibly settle for 3rd. It'd be fun. :)

You must not have been paying close enough attention to when I was teasing Alcano at the U.S. Open with those two first games we played. ;)

Easy John, don't go breaking that hammerhead cue over Ed's head. I was just teasing you.

Ed did make it to New Orleans with Buddy Hall in tow (probably a year ago or so) and mentioned that he was from California and I figured that he might have known you. He never said a word about you or any other CA player (you have my word on that).

So now you don't have to go putting the hurt on Ed. Ed apparently already knows how to get under your skin. :D He doesn't have to give you up to get a rise out of you. :D

There has to be something there to give up anyway, and there is not that much left anymore. The good news is I don't have trouble getting action, just trouble taking it off. Ed and I have been friendly competitors for a long time and neither of us would say a peep (unless there was a jelly involved). Happy New Year and I envy all of you that make it to Derby City. Maybe next year when I'm even older and more out of stroke. John

Joey I am a perennial tournament goer. Im in the latter stages of my life and now have enough to travel wherever I want and nobody to cater to. And no boss to hassle me. My eyes arent good so I just sweat on the rail but I enjoy myself.
The best bet for you is The Hard TImes Jamboree. Ive been several times from LA. A lot of action and some mini's as well. I got to play Rodney Morris in a cheap ($20) one pocket mini. I always got the first shot but he always got the 8 and out. Some cheap motels close by and a great Vietnamese restaurant in walking distance also some card clubs close by. Some mens clubs too.
Always great action and great players. Parica, Palmer, Chohan, Amar Kang, Sambojon, Manalo, Bucktooth, Scott Frost, Efren, Bustamante, Alex, etc. Ive all seen there in a comfortable environment with great seating that doesnt crowd the players.
Then Reno comes after that which is a great tournament. Its 9 ball though all the way and they dont encourage after hours gambling on the table as they want everyone don in the casino. But there are some good matches and if youre playing you will get a good workout with the local shortstops trying to move up the ranks.
I think this will be your best bet for a great pool trip.

Ive always wanted to ask this question but was afraid for some misunderstandings. I am interested in attending the Cannons event in Chattanooga and always wanted to go to Alabama for their bar table tournament which I hear is action loaded and Grady's tournament in S.C. But I was talking to a Black Woman who I met on an airplane and she said Chattanooga is still one of the racist cities where black and whites are divided.
Being from a small town in the most western of all states, Hawaii, I just heard all my life, since the 50's, of the racial turmoil and disharmony in the southernmost states. But being from Hawaii I met a lot of guys in the military who were from the south and they and their families were the most kindest and gentlest of all peoples. Of course they were on my turf and needed my assistance and knowledge.
Now my question is this. How safe is it for people of color to go to a city like Chattanooga. I mean I really question this as I am Asian and have been hassled in a lot of cities as Ive been through most of the midwest and northern states. I been jumped in Milwaukee from Vietnam Vets who thought I was a "gook" as well as in CHicago from World War 2 vets who still remember Pearl Harbor. Most of these guys probably never saw combat. Its always those guys. But Ive refrained from traveling down south because of my stories of the prejudice.
I really want to go to support Shannon and his tournament and I think it will be a great one as well as Grady's. But really how is it.
I am a friend of Gerald McRaney, you know from Simon and SImon, and he tells me I should come down to Louisiana. He is an honorary sherrif down there and was a good friend of Harry Lee, a CHinese American who was the head sherrif of the parish down there. I met some great players from there as well. A young man by the name of Jamie who is one hell of a bank pool wizard.
I really want to make this tour of the south. BUt I do have my prejudices.

Is it old age like me? Just kidding but the Reno open no longer follows the Jamboree. They are now split up with the Jamboree in June and the Reno Open in Dec. Hopefully they will change back to the old format. But you sure are right about the players and the action at Hardtimes , Sac. is a great spectator room.

And sing "Camptown Racetrack 9 Miles Long, Do-Dah-Do-Dah"
