I have known Jim for a lot of years, and have a damn nice collection of his cues, so, I consider myself one who knows a lot about his cues.
Jim is extremely picky and precise in choosing the woods he uses on his cues. His ring-work is near scientific, perfect balance, many of his shafts are made from 30 yr old "BOWLING ALLEY" wood, and his finish jobs are like glass.
