Better Player Question

I know this is a very subjective question but there are a few cues that I am looking at and wanted to get others thoughts. I already have a fancy PFD but I am looking for more of a regular player. Here are some of the makers that I am considering and I wanted to get others thoughts.

1.) Diveney - $500 - can get a nice Diveney with lake salvaged shaft
2.) Olney - $600 - These are a bit harder to come across but I have seen them around this price
3.) Scruggs - $500 - I could get a Scruggs sneaky for same price as other cues
4.) Frey - $350 - I have seen Frey sneakies for around $350 and could get a nicer one for around $600
5.) Esoteric Sneaky - $375 - This is a newer maker but I have heard good things about their cues
6.) Josey - $400-$600 - I have my eye on a very nice Merry Widow
7.) Pierce - $300-$500 - I have heard good things about the bowling alley shafts

If you were going to buy a cue in this range from the list above then who would you choose? Is there another maker that is your obvious choice but is not listed above?

Here's my two cents. I know some top flight players who play with Diveneys. Same with Olneys. I've hit a bit with both and don't think you'd be disappointed with either. I know I wouldn't.

I have a Pierce, and it's a fine player as well. I played with it exclusively for about a year, until I got my current player, a Carmeli. For me, the Carmeli fit like a tailored glove.

I can't speak to the others on your list, but it looks to be a pretty good list. Hit as many as you can. When you hit the right one, you'll know. Pull the trigger on that one.
 
I think the Diveney is my favorite. I'm guessing you're referring to the ebony 4 pointer with the leather wrap in the WFS section. I don't even need a playing cue and have toyed with grabbing that one.

Honestly, if it had a steel or ivory joint I probably would already have it. That is one of the best deals on here right now IMO.

Nothing I've found hits sweeter and feels better in my hands than my Josey sneaky with a timeless timber shaft.

I also like the way Pierce cues hit and have a pretty fancy one on the way.

But, I think cues are very much like shoes, you have to find the one that fits and not just get what everybody else has.
 
why not a pfd?

if you like pfd, then why not get a less fancy one? there's a fantastic deal on a 5 point v-splice that someone posted not long ago.

Of all the cues listed, the only one I have ever owned was a Scruggs sneaky. I wish I had never sold it. It played awesome.

I have also heard great things about Rick's cues(Esoteric) and I plan on having him build me a cue as soon as I have the funds.

I have played a few games with a nice Diveney, and it played great. It was ivory jointed though.

As for the other makers, I have no personal experience wit their cues. But in all honesty, I have only ever heard good things about their cues. I have a list in my head of cuemakers to be wary of, as far as playability. None of the above makers is on that list.

And I believe the Thaiger was poking fun at the spelling of the word salvaged in the one post. It reads "savaged".

Good spot. Actually, it was a bit of both - I guessed it was salvaged, but didn't know the history until DD explained.

I'll tell you something, pool is bloody weird.

Very true.

Josey's timeless timber shaft - how much do they deflect? I'm interested in getting one made but can't cope with deflection.
 
do people not like pechauer on this forum? they are my favorite and can be had in the OP's price range...

I was thinking the same thing initially... but the PFD that you are referring to I think was around $850.... it is just a bit too much for me right now.

Production cues. The OP seems interested in custom work.
I've played with both Scruggs and Josey but have owned only a Scruggs and that was not a sneaky pete. I've heard good things about all these cue makers, though.

i don't think so, it was the purpleheart one, i thought it was listed for 650. i think the forsale title was stupid good deal or something like that
 
My daily player is a Diveney. I am from Iowa though, lol, and slightly biased. Its an ebony four pointer, with a black G-10 radial pin. If this cue was purple with pink polka dots I would use it. Its a straight up killer, and yes I use a lake salvage shaft.

They seem to move whitey so well you think you had it on a string. Olney makes a great cue as well with that stiff Southwest hit that seems so desireable to a lot of players, but I didnt like how they played.

Fitting a cue is such a personal thing, that there is no right or wrong answer here....just play with the makers you are looking into and find what works for you. I know a few guys that use a Wal-Mart special with a good tip and love em. Good luck in your search!
