Big Ten Schools' Pool Championship

Hi guys,

I was wondering if there were any pool players out there from the midwest Big Ten schools --- Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, Northwestern, Ohio State, Penn State, Purdue & Wisconsin --- that are interested in coming together to organize our own Big Ten Pool Championship.

I know that there's another post where Grady was asked to bump this idea up to the NCAA, but we could still start small and do something. I run the pool club at and U of Illinois and I know that Indiana U is game for something. Are there other forum users from the other schools that might be interested? Yes, I know, we already have the ACUI regionals, but having one more pool tourney is only gonna mean more fun!

In addition, any potential sponsors, marketers, and people who just have comments and suggestions are welcome to post. Other schools not in the Big Ten are welcome too, we could do something separate as well.

All roads are open!!!

Great Idea you have. Wheteher you talk to NCAA or not to get started is just a question.

However, you can talk to the folks @ Professor Q-Ball, that do a lot for intramural leagues in High Schools & maybe colleges too.

I always thought that would be a great idea to do intra-state between the state schools. I know of some players at DIII schools in WI that would be interested, but as far as UW-Madison the players are pretty weak. Talk to Barry Hart at Viking (608-271-5155) he might be interested in some sponsorship for this type of event.

Hi Ceebee,

I've never really heard of Prof Qball, but I just checked out their website and they seem to be more 3 cushion billiards...but I'll still run it by them and see what they can do for it.

Perhaps, a BreakRak for a prize? :D

Not interested. Thanks anyway.

Dear Splinterhands,

perhaps you can tell me which school you are speaking for, or if you are speaking for yourself, so that I can call one less school when I am planning for this.

thanks.

Hi TCox,

Do you by any chance represent any of the schools in WI??? Is DIII = Division 3? What kind of division players are these? I'm sorry, I'm not familiar with all the tourneys around.

Barry Hart at Viking has been TREMENDOUS in helping the Illini Billiards Club, he has donated quite a few items to us and we will definitely do our utmost to put them to the best use. Yes, if we have anything close to this scale, we will contact Viking for sure.

People,

Kindly help me out here and put in any suggestions, comments or potential roadblocks...I know that there are a WEALTH of tourney organizers and promoters here in AZ...my experience is limited only to school tourneys so if I can get some good advice, I can try and put something successful together.

Also, in case some schools in the Big Ten Conference are not that interested or cannot partake in such an event, I'm also thinking flexible --- we could do something like midwest colleges competition or something like that. Maybe even for starters, an "Illinois Colleges" competitions, or WI, MI, IN and the like. The idea about the Big Ten was just to keep the playing field smaller...else we might see far too many players in one competition.

If you end up doing a tournament near Indianapolis or Bloomington, I would volunteer to help out (if you need it) with tournament direction or refereeing.

Iowa State has a pool and billiard club (last I heard) They would surely be interested.

Hi deadstroke7,

I appreciate the input. I went on their website, and yes it seems like everything is still going well for them. I will contact them.

thanks!

Hi Williebetmore,

Thanks for wanting to help!!

We would definitely require much advice with tourney direction and refereeing, that's for sure.

On another note, did you happen to be at the ACUI regionals early this year at Mr and Miss Cue? I know that's only like some 10 minutes from the city.

Raemondo,
No, I did not even know they were there or I would have made it a point to attend. I used to play ACUI bridge tournaments in 1971-1975. They were held in conjunction with the other ACUI sports (pool, chess, table tennis). I was able to see a fairly good player by the name of Nick Varner compete for Purdue - he was well above average (in fact he stomped everyone).

Raemondo,

I am out of school now but a kid that comes to Cue Nique plays at UW-Whitewater and they have a billiard club there. UW-Madison doesn't have too many good players if any. Last year when my fiance won college nationals she was the best player at the school, for the most one of the only players there. Most DIII schools have a billiards club and I am sure they would love to do something like this. All schools have a van and the students can schedule it to go a school event with schools in northern IL. There are 6 schools scattered along southern WI that all have billiard clubs that would be within a 3 hour drive to Chicago.

Just an FYI, intra- means within and inter- means between. So, this would be inter-state competition as opposed to a state championship which would be an intra-state competition.

Please don't think I'm trying to be an ass or the grammar police, I'm truly just trying to be helpful. Good luck with this idea, even though I'm in the Big 12...lol.

Ok, I'll play! There is no "e" in "truly". (Truly!)

Hi Williebetmore,

Yea I dunno how much hype ACUI nationals get nowadays cos I've never had the skill to go to one, but from the 2 regionals I've seen, they're pretty quiet and they don't seem to draw many crowds during matchplay. The one last year though was a lil bigger cos they got Alison Fisher to come down for an exhibition. Also like you said, the ACUI sports are still all held together I believe, at least it was last year.

If you can, you should really try and and come down for regionals early next year --- it's gonna be at my school, the U of Illiniois at Urbana - Champaign. And wow, I would have LOVED to see Nick Varner play then...he's one of my favorite contemplative players....sadly no such great pool player I know has walked out of UIUC!!
