Billiard Room Owners Association

There are several thousand pool rooms across America, its time we create an association of our own, to pool OUR resources together, to do the things thats good for our business. Together we could turn our industry around. Together we could have our own association for US, and the buying power and clout that comes with being united. IS there anyone out there who are insterested? IS there any help out there to put this together? We join together and get united, then we will control this industry. This is just for those who own their own billiard room.

There already is such an organization. It is the Billiard Congress of America. They have decades of experience organizing Billiard Rooms. Are you a member?

Billiard room owners association

where is BCA billiard room? This association would be just for billiard room owners, and a non profit association whose president made no salary. And yes we have been members but its not the type of association billiard room owners need.

sad state of pool

I posted on this subject towards the end of "sad state of pool" on this forum. I got no PM's or interest what-so-ever. IMHO, there are three reasons for that, 1) owners are too busy trying to survive to even think of being part of an organization start-up, 2) they have been burned by organizations such as the BCA that takes your money and doesn't give anything substantial in return, and 3) owners just don't care.

Paul - if you are a room owner, which I don't believe you are, what has the BCA done to help with your room? I always have a problem with people who think they know what they are talking about but haven't a clue. BTW, do you have BCA room membership?

Sorry, for coming on strong but this is a subject that is near and dear to me.

Room owners PLEASE respond as to why you aren't interested. An organization such as this would benefit every owners bottom line. If you have questions, please post them so they can be discussed and answered.

What? No response

I see that this thread has had 87 visitors and yet there is no response. Just thought I would put it back on top of the heap and see if that helps.

great idea though

I have absolutly no extra funds to join anything now, just getting by at the present, even though I do like the idea

No money needed - just leg work

High Run,

At least someone recognizes the benefits room owners would receive. Thank you for responding.

To even get such an idea of the ground it will take time and legwork. I would be happy to find 20 owners from around the country that would be willing to burn up bandwidth to organize various aspects of the project.

Far as I'm concerned, the ones that can put in some time to get such an organization going should be permanent board of diectors and entitled to free lifetime benefits. You are the ones that embrace the vision and make it a reality.

If there are owners out there that can embrace the idea and have some time for ideas, research and some legwork, please respond.

PM me if you want to stay under the radar.

I am all for an organization like this, and with the internet it would easy for each pool room to come aboard and be a voice in this organization. We would need a website and the legwork to get owners involved. The potental this association would be to the owners could be huge if we spoke with one voice. The cost could be as little as free, or just basic donation to pay costs involved. It would be important that this be nonprofit, we do this ourselves. All our meetings could be done right on the internet. Helping and shareing with each other things which are dear to this business. And if it was to grow into hundreds/thousand of pool rooms, we never lose sight of our values, and as we grow, the more clout we would have in the industry. And the more this association could do for each of our businesses.

Paul, I am sorry but the BCA is as use less as breasts on a female Pig, they doing nothing for Room Owner, in fact they do nothing that isn't self serving!!!!!!

I am not a room owner, yet, but it's in the works.

I do promote leagues and tournaments in several pool rooms in the St. Louis/Metro East area and have come to one conclusion: "Most" pool room owners are lazy and want everything for nothing. They don't want to spend a dime to make a quarter, don't advertise, don't listen to their customers or even employees. This type of room owner is killing our sport!

I'm not saying that ALL room owners are like this, just MOST of whom I've conducted business with.

The Billiard Room Association (BRA) or whatever it's name will be IS NEEDED for survival, in my opinion! An Association where ideas, concepts, merchandise discounts, advertising, etc can be shared and help each room owner, not hinder them. In stead of working against each other, we need to work together! The BCA is not a benefit to room owners at all, form our own Association and watch the benefits rise to the top!

My room has been a member of the BCA for decades. I am so busy right now, I just don't have time to answer the questions posted here. I will try to answer next week.

What did I miss?

We too WERE members of the BCA for decades. I am anxiously awaiting your post to find out what I missed from them.

Really, tho' I am happy to hear your room is doing well. Please inform the rest of us about your room and the secrets of being so busy. (If you have time?)

The Twin Cities - 6 rooms down - 5 still open.

Local cooperation works well for us

Jim Buss Custom Cues started a local site in St Louis called the St. Louis Pool Association. The website is http://stlpool.com

We have worked a lot of hours making this a cooperative entity promoting pool with all the local bars and pool rooms able to advertise equally for tournaments or events. It takes a ton of time to work on and makes no money for Jim. But I think it works to some degree. So a national organization will be hard for me to support because I dont see the return on investment ever coming to fruition. Every area is different and has different needs for the pool community. Local organization and cooperation would be more productive and profitable in a shorter amount of time. But every city would have to find a leader willing to donate a ton of time to get it going.

We are thinking on different levels here. I'm thinking group buying power from cue, table, furniture, accessory, etc. manufacturers. I'm thinking of buying power from insurance companies, including liability, dram, property and all the other insurances we need. I'm thinking that it would have been nice to have a spokesperson at these lawmaking sessions that have hurt so many rooms. Yep, if you don't have any of these expenses then this is not the organization for you.

I realize I may be coming off a bit heavy handed, don't mistake that as anger or calling people names. I am just very passionate about this endeavor and sincerely believe that it would help the room owners in cutting costs and add more to the bottom line.

More details of the Vision

I am writing you and room owners throughout the United States to share in a vision, a vision to make life a little easier for all of us that are directly involved in room ownership.

Certainly from reading posts on AZBilliards.com and my own local experience of seeing 6 rooms go down in a three year period, most room owners are having a difficult time making ends meet. Is this you?

We, the room owners have a chance to change the face of the industry. We have a chance to elevate the standing of the rooms. We have a chance to make this sport what we envisioned so many years ago. We have a chance not only to be successful in our endeavors but to exceed those expectations.

Let’s look at some of the problems we all face.
Insurance costs
Liability
Dram Shop
Health Insurance for you and your employees
Business interruption
Cost of Cues
Sliding cost scale many cuemakers have dependant on volume
Slow service to the rooms for a special order
Not being able to buy directly from the manufacturers
Cost of Food and Beverage
Cost of Accessories
Internet competition taking away sales
Advertising and Marketing
Raising Added money for successful tournament events

I can go on with these but it just gets me depressed as I’m sure it does for you.

What can WE do about it?

The Vision
I want to put a proprietor’s coalition together. I certainly don’t want this to be a "for-profit" group. We room owners have been gouged enough. Think about the possibilities. By having a large group, all needing and wanting a better life and better sport, we can make great strides to that end.

The number one question I’m asked when talking to owners is, “What’s in it for me?” a very good question that needs to be answered with specific examples and be owner friendly. What is the list of items that we can do as a power group instead of individual businesses?

Buying Power or Power Buying

Insurance: As a group with power buying, we can lower the costs of insurance to almost all the room owners. That is a significant and IMMEDIATE savings for you.

Brick & Mortar vs. the Internet: The internet sales have helped in the demise of many rooms. Income that was once exclusive to the rooms is now being divided by large internet companies invading our space and taking our sales. At one time cue sales and accessories were just an added income to the room. NOT SO ANYMORE. Most rooms need that income to stay in business. As individual owners we are not able to get to the volume needed to get the price breaks from the manufacturers that large internet companies get. That is not right. As a coalition of owners we would have the buying power to get those price breaks. We would have the power to buy directly from the manufacturers. We could have the buying power to compete with internet sales. We can take back what belongs in the owners’ scope of business. Whether it is cues and accessories, tips, cloth, chalk, etc., we would have the buying power to go direct at lower manufacturer prices.

National Contracts: A proprietor group can also negotiate national contracts with various food soda and liquor vendors to reduce our costs and enhance our profits. We would NOT be setting retail prices but getting product at lower costs.

These are just some of the savings that can be realized with a large cohesive group of owners that want to be successful.

Please indulge my vision for possible future offerings.

If we work hard together to make this a reality, think of what we can do. We can begin a new era of room ownership.
1) We can create real tours with real sponsorship to member rooms. Wouldn’t it be nice to have a pro tour stop at your room and get help with added money, advertising and media representation?
2) We can create our own website for members to buy from the recommended manufacturers. No muss, no fuss and we know that we are getting the lowest price available. Members can order product directly through the site to make getting product easier, faster and with confidence.
3) We can buy national advertising for the sport with room insertion for area advertising.

So…what am I looking for right now?

First, I want to reiterate that I AM NOT looking to make money out of this venture. What could be better for this sport than a proprietors’ organization?

All I ask is that you respond to this letter with your thoughts or acknowledgement and consider the proposal. If you are interested enough to want to help and be on the ground floor of an exciting time, I might ask you for some volunteer time to help this vision come to fruition. Will it be some hard work? Yes. Will we have setbacks? Yes. Is it a worth while endeavor? Yes!

Thanks for reading

Too Big For This Forum

BTW the title of my reply is positive. Let me explain………

Every reason you have expressed for having a room owners association I agree with 100% However, I think the hope of building the beginnings here might be way too broad..Not to mention too many malcontents to nay say. But I have some positive suggestions that might actually get this thing off the ground.

1st Premise
Room owners that have time to work on this project have rooms that are producing. The owners that don't have time are the ones who truly need the alliance of a group. With that being said a group of less than 20 owners could form the core of such a group. You would want that core to be owners with successful rooms that could together represent REAL buying power. This alone would attract some real options from all of the areas we would hope to gain discounts as a group. After that core was formed we could then attach the smaller rooms that would rather attach to such a group instead of being involved in the at the structure level. So…..Breath..lol

2nd Premise
All interested room owners need to establish the beginnings of an annual meeting. Could structure it around Derby or The Trade Show (A+) At that time you could make permeant structure to your group. President etc etc. Not to mention at the trade show you could be hands on with ALL suppliers in billiards. No better time to make yourself known to these folks. Think of all the great connections that could be made alone.

3rd Premise
Its all about what they can get. Thats what ultimately decides how many rooms will sign on. If its a no brainer you will have a winner. The relationships that are formed through the leadership of such a group and product suppliers is the KEY to determine what THEY can get. Without a strong core of in leadership you can't negotiate anything.

Closing
Set a good time to hold a real meeting. Could be really informal the first year. If a lot of folks want to attend might need a east coast and west coast set up. Invite any owner that is willing to attend. But make sure to make it a Billiard related trip. Trade Show, Tourney, Etc. That way no matter what happens great ideas can be exchanged and the Billiard aspect can be stimulated by the scheduled event. I will expand on this if I see things progressing. I would be willing to attend such an event and could probably get 2-3 other great room owners to attend.

too big

Clay,

Your insights are well thought out and on the mark. From this thread it sounds like we have have 3 to 5 owners. Maybe if I send letters of this thread to specific owners we can recruit more.

Sooooo, if there are suggestions out there of room owners that might be interested, please pm me or post the names and locations. Once we have the interest, I'll be glad to do this with a follow-up.

Thank you for your post and defining and refining the idea. This possibility needs people like you to be able to come to fruition.

All the benifits listed in these post are very positive and not out of reach. Wags, you see the need and feel as passionate as I do about this issue, while there are times I think its out of reach or maybe it would be spotty getting owners to join in. I do know if we did succeed, we, the room owners, would together change things for the better for us. Separately we are weak, together we could do unimaginable things to benefit all of us. "P.R.O.S." poolroom owners society.
