Dr Dave....sometimes I wish you had chosen a more formal name for your AZ presence.

Your work reminds me of the spirit of Samuel Johnson, IMO, a much more influential
person than even Shakespeare to the English language.
His book allowed us to communicate more clearly to everybody who spoke English,
regardless of their local dialect.
Can you imagine how many more misunderstandings there would be without a dictionary?

Now, nobody refers to him as Sam or Sammy.
So can the diminutive...at least use David....if not your full title. :)

This rant is a pool player's way of expressing your importance to the billiard world, sir.

...we are much more comfortable dissing someone.....:embarrassed2:

Thanks Neil. To me those are reasons, why people might not like the BU Exams and the BU diploma process.

I was more curious about the BU instructional DVD series, which contains lots of useful instruction. Maybe people are so turned off by the exams, they might think the DVDs won't be of benefit. The DVDs do use the exam drills as a framework, but the DVDs also contain lots of useful instruction in all of the exam categories that could be helpful even to people who don't like the exam drills, IMO.
I think people may not realize there is a different between the DVDs and exam and drills. It may not be clear that the DVDs are actual instructional material instead of the video version of the drills and exam. They may think it's the same thing as your BU youtube videos. I actually didn't know there was a distinction myself until reading this thread.
I think you are correct. That was a marketing error on my part. Live and learn.

Also, I want to say how much I like your site. It's an incredible wealth of information. Also, I really like the BU exams and drills. It really got me on the way to making significant improvements in my level of play. I need to run through the exam again and get a new score. Also, that reminds me I need to get back to doing some of the drills. I feel they really sharpen a lot of important aspects of one's game.
Thanks for the feedback. I look forward to seeing your improved BU scores (and videos if possible) in the AZB BU thread.

Regards,
Dave

Thank you for the sentiment; although, I like "Dr. Dave" just fine. That's what my engineering students and pool friends have called me for decades, and I like it.

Regards,
Dr. David G. Alciatore, PhD, PE, Dean of the Billiard University :grin-square:

As a new player I am VERY grateful for the articles and other resources you work so hard on, Dr. Dave.

As a side note, I keep thinking about having one of your proofs printed on a t-shirt just to confuse people. For example, I'd get TP 4.1 from this document printed on a t-shirt.

http://billiards.colostate.edu/technical_proofs/new/TP_B-8.pdf

And when someone asks what it is I'll look at them funny and say " the cue ball speed and spin change during drag over distance x on the way to the object ball...duh!".

Go for it. Just don't complain to me if you get beat up after school. :grin-square:

Dave

No problem. I've been a software developer for 20 years so I'm used to representing the geek population. Besides, we're under represented in pool as far as I can tell. ;)

Count me among Dr. Dave's many grateful admirers. He gets some flack sometimes for posting lots of links to his website (always by some doofus with an axe to grind), but if he took the time to even cut and paste the actual relevant content he'd never get to do anything else, like earn a living or sleep.

As I've said many times, one of Dr. Dave's links is usually worth more than all the other posts on whatever the topic is.

Thanks again, Doc. Keep the links coming!

Thanks again to everybody for the kinds and supportive words about my site.

Knowing that people appreciate it helps justify all of the effort and time I've put in over the years.

I definitely think it was time well spent, and I am proud of the result.

Thanks again,
Dave

It certainly was (and continues to be) time well spent; you have a right to be proud of your work.

The pool world is fortunate in having someone of Dave's scholarly abilities so interested in the game.

For a peak at some of the other stuff Dr. Dave has been doing over the past 25 or 30 years, check out some of the links here: http://www.engr.colostate.edu/faculty-staff/profiles.php?id=70

Agreed, fantastic body of work and enormous amount of dedication.
If billiards had an Honor Society Dr. Dave leads the pack.

Sincerely: SS

Dr Dave,
I layed off pool for 17 years and have been very slow coming back.
I have two of your DVD sets which are great!
But your web site is very useful for solving my consistency issues.

It might only be a coincidence....
...but the state Dr Dave lives in has a great fondness for pool.
