Billiards of Springfield's Turkey Shootout-Nov.29th

Cool deal, glad to hear you and some others will be here! Ol' rollin' Nolan hasn't been around in quite some time. I haven't even seen the guy in over a year at least. I'll give him the number though if I do see him.

hmmm...when I lived up there all the pool rooms went out back for their calcuttas I might have to rethink the trip....unless there is good added money..

The only calcuttas in Springfield I can remember were at Sir Gregory's, Dennis' Place and Just One More's annual tournament. I don't remember Billiards or Sharkey's ever having one previously. Anyway Phil's not going to allow it so that is out for sure. I would really doubt that there will be any serious added money either as the most that has ever been added to a tournament at Billiards was $200 added via a local beer distributor's pocketbook. Sorry man, just the facts of pool in this town. I'm trying to change that, but it's not going to happen without me making this event a success for both the business and the players. It's not easy tryin' to please 'em all, but I'm gonna try. :)

too bad there is no more golf game going on in spfd, I had tons fun with you guys on the big table
I'm still tossing around the ideas and undecided where I wanna go for thanksgiving, but would love to play in your tournament if I do go back.. wish you have a great turnout!!

Zach,
No worries man, Springfield frustrates me alot too with the limitations and lack of effort people put into the pool scene around here. I'm trying to work this in steps to re-ignite a flame and get something going again on a regular basis. A decade ago you could find a tournament every single night of the week, yet today it has deminished down to a dismall and depressing level. :( I get alot of encouragement from the local players to get something going again and we'll see how many show up and support this first "step" on the 29th. It would be great to have ya come up for it as well, but I totally understand if you can't either. I know it would be awefully hard for me to cruise that far if there wasn't the strong possability of me making some money on the trip.

Sasman,

Great to hear from you too bro. I'm sorry I missed you when you were in town! I think I was working or something that night until late and probably went straight home afterwards. When the daily golf game died it hurt bad man! That was a great time everyday and I miss it dearly as well. Man, we'd love to have you come to town again for Thanksgiving and the tournament as well! I'm sure my mother wouldn't mind setting out one more plate for a friend and I'll send you a message on here about a place to stay while your here. A mutual friend that I'm sure wouldn't mind having ya hang out for a few days.

Keep hittin' 'em straight boys!

I just can't believe it died up there...I used to go to Sharkys every morning when I woke up until I had to go to work a sir greg's..We used to play pay ball and golf everyday..and when I didn't do that I played straight pool with an old retired cop but I can't remember his name..

That's Buko, Zach! He's still coming into Billiards occasionally and plays with Super Dave and myself sometimes. Yeah, the scene is hurting pretty bad and that's why I'm tryin' to get it cookin' again. I'm going to do the work, and I'm hoping that I get some support from the locals as they see that I'm trying to give them an opportunity to play in something solid that isn't going to be desolved within a month or so. I know it will take time, but thankfully I'm not planning on diein' anytime soon! LOL

I went out to the ol' tavern league last night and passed out a bunch of card sized fliers to some of the local players. Man, it really is hard to find a happy medium between the vast skill levels of pool players. The "players" all want the higher entry fees and longer races. The lesser players all want lower fees, shorter races and handicapping on anything over a race to 4. Man, it really is hard to please 'em all.

My belief:
If someone offers a tournament in your area play it! Regardless of the tournaments entry fees, race format or handicapping. You ask why? Because without player support you might not have another opportunity besides the one in front of you. I for one do not want the only tournament in town being the good ol' race to 2 bartable B.S. that is predominant throughout the pool world. Arrrrrrgh!

Sorry about all that, just had to vent a bit! LOL

Ok, doin' the happy dance again....alllllll goooooood! :)

I've had Gilbert from up around the Fort Leonard Wood/Rolla area come down to Springfield this past weekend and he confirmed that he's coming down as well as somewhere between 15 or 20 players that he said were interested as well from that area. I'm estimating at least 20 to 30 local participants as well, but I won't know anything solid until that day. I've distributed fliers throughout billiards and hand delivered other's to individuals throughout the local bars too. I would love to be filling in a 64 man bracket, but I will be very happy if I have anything over 40 players. I'm not going to put much faith in the numbers until I'm sittin' there collecting entry fees and see the slots fill up. As I said before, though, I'll put no cap on the number of entries no matter what and I'm hoping for the biggest turnout yet for an event at Billiards. Hey, Sas said he's coming up as well. It'll be nice to have an ol' friend around for the Thanksgiving holiday through the weekend! :D

is there going to be a calcutta? i think that would make a great edition to the tourney. btw, me and 3 guys are driving from kc to make the trip. cant wait till we get there!

I'm not going to be able to have a calcutta due to the owner of Billiards, but I'm working on that for future tournaments. Sorry, maybe next time. Glad to hear you and your's will be down on Saturday though.

Have a great Thanksgiving everyone!

Great tournament Sam, had a great time. My friend and I came down from the Rolla area as well. I didn't see Gilbert there, was kinda looking forward to seeing him again. I think I ended up around 17th, wound up losing my first, won a few, and lost to Sas in the losers round. Will definetly b back next year.

Thanks for coming down Dwayne. It was great to have you and the guys from the Rolla area in town for this event and I'll definately post all our future events regardless of size on here from now on so please stay tuned.

Just an little update for all who came and supported this event:

We ended up with 48 entrants, thank you all for the support!

We paid eight places as follows:

1st: Kenny Turner-$336.00
2nd: Mike Donovan-$240.00
3rd: Jim Helt-$144.00
4th: Dusty Campbell-$96.00
5th/6th: Will Brannock/Trevor Brown-$48.00/each
7th/8th: Steve Matlock/J.J. Murphy-$24.00/each

It was a pleasure to see such support from both the local and distant pool communities and I greatly appreciate all of you who showed up! I learned alot myself and I'll continue to try and persuade the management for added money and less green's fees next time. Thanks again and I look forward to seeing you all again next time.

Trevor, great shooting man! I know all about that drive between K.C. and Springfield bro, and you aint liein' about how boring that road is either!

I'll get some things straightened out with Billiards and try to get us some more events scheduled in the near future.

Once again thanks to everyone who showed up for this event. I hope everyone had a great time as well!
