Billy Palmer on a Roll in Phoenix!

Wow, this is the second tournament I've read about that Billy Palmer won, and each one of these tournaments had very tough fields.

The story is on the Main Page of AzBilliards entitled: "Palmer Wins Desert Dust-Off."

They paid out 25 spots, and Billy Palmer pocketed a really nice chunk of cheese.

"1st place Billy Palmer $5,425.00
2nd place Jeremy Jones $2,860.00
3rd place Jose Parica $1,460.00
4th place Tony Confalone $850.00...."

I have never seen as big a drop as this tournament, from the 1st place monies to the 4th place monies. However, I am aware that each tournament has their own formula when it comes to cutting up the total purse.

It's good to see Jose Parica hitting 'em strong! :)

Jam, we don't have calcuttas out here. The liquor board shut them down years ago. So instead, we have side pots where players can pay additional monies to be part of the side pot. The largest side pot ($40) paid 70/30 so there was a pretty big chunk of change for that one.

It was great to see that calibre of players at a local event and it was especially nice to see double J hitting balls again.

The event was the largest payout we have had at an Arizona event for as long as I remember and it all ran smooth as silk. 119 players in 2 1/2 days in a 7 table room looked like a nightmare waiting to happen, but the tourney director stayed on top of it and ran the event great.

I know that I have encountered some regions where Calcuttas are the norm, and right here in my neck of the woods, D.C. Metro area, it's kind of taboo, though some folks do it under the table and claim to give 10 percent of all monies collected to charity.

Well, it sure did put a squash into the rumor that Jeremy Jones had retired. I read where he made the winner's round, but was defeated by Billy Palmer. Was the finals match a true double-elimination format where Billy had to beat Jeremy twice, or did they just have one race for all the cheese?

Seven tables with 119 players? YIKES!

You are right. Any TD who can handle those logistics deserves a gold star. That is one tough schedule to follow.

Looks like pool is alive and well in Arizona! Thanks for the updates. :)

I was so blessed when I saw the front page of AZBilliards this morning and read of Billy's win in Phoenix. In my morning prayer session, two Scriptures kept coming up to pray over Billy:

Jeremiah 29:11
"For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the LORD, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope."

Psalm 1:3
He shall be like a tree
Planted by the rivers of water,
That brings forth its fruit in its season,
Whose leaf also shall not wither;
And whatever he does shall prosper.

The Spirit also told me that although Billy Palmer has been playing pool for years and years, his "roll" is just starting.

Go Billy! Love ya, Brother!

Peace and blessing to you and yours...

Mike can you tell me a little more about side pots and how PRECISELY they work. You have more than one side pot? They pay two spots only, 70/30, correct? What exactly do you mean by the largest side pot is $40? Is that the amount of money that is paid by each player participating in that particular side pot? CAn side pots be participated by the "spectators"?
Thanks,

Kudos should be given to Visual Impressions (Chuck Bobbitt) for sponsoring the event & adding $5K to the event.

I am not shocked at all that the tournament went as smooth as it did. Ron & Bull (& Mike) are known for running smooth events. Bull also is the TD for the OBDAAT.

& Yes pool in AZ is about as strong as it has been in about 15 years.

The Olhausen Billiards Desert All Around Tour has been the fuel to get Arizona pool back on the map. And now that the tour is open to out of state players and with all the sponsors, it will probably evolve into one of the best tours in the Western Region.

Specatators are not allowed to get in them. (However they could back a player in them...but that is between the player & spectator)

Basically side pots are like side entry tournaments. No player is required to enter a side pot.

It would go something like this.

Tournament Entry $60 (Required for anyone who wants to play)
Side Pot - $10 (Optional)
Side Pot - $20 (Optional)
Side Pot - $40 (Optional)

As the entry for side pots go up, less players will enter.

Typically only the strongest players in the field get into the higher $$ side pots....so they usually make that a winner take all or only pay two spots.

Sometimes a player won't have the extra money to get into the side pots, a spectator will "loan" the player the money to get in one or all the side pots (that the player did not alredy enter).......at least that is the legal way of doning it..... ;) :D

That is FANTASTIC news, BRKNRUN! :)

I've always said that the regional tours give the best bang for the buck, and today they seem to attract quite a stellar field. Arizona rocks!

CONGRATS to Billy Palmer!!!! He's a great player, and I've been lucky enough to watch and play him. I've learned a lot from watching him play one pocket especially.

JAM said Billy is on a roll. I guess with his confession of faith, he needs to come out with a line of religious T-Shirts, something like maybe.................HOLY ROLLER....... maybe with a pool table with musical notes symbolizing the hymns he sings and the reflection of a cross on a cue ball.

I wish someone would design him a T-Shirt like that in Vector art. There are many print shops now that can print from a vector art file in full process color and can print one shirt at a time for VERY reasonable money. The real work is in the design of the shirt. If anyone designs the shirt, I will get it printed. PM me for the size layout needed and any other specs.

Very happy for Billy. I never knew what he looked like before this. It would be an honor to compete in the same field as he.

Mike Howerton did an excellent job reporting on this tournament. If you are interested in reading more about this tournament, there is another article about the tournament with tons of photos. The article is on www.azpoolscene.com which is a web site that concentrates on pool in Arizona.

Great story, and I loved seeing the picks of all the players. :)

That "Bull" guy sure does look a lot like Rude Dog! :p

P.S. I also notice there is no Discussion Forum on this website! LOL! I still think that the name of "AzBilliards" came from "Arizona Billiards," with A-Z being the abbreviation for Arizona. Today, though, AzBilliards is thought of as "the A to Z of Billiards."

Billy "crucified" me on a bar table a few years ago (gotta hate a bar table). He was very impressive. Seemed like a good guy, very nice. I wondered why I'd never heard of him before. Seeing him win doesn't surprise me. Makes me feel a little better actually, lol!

Originally, it was AZBilliards - as in "Arizona Billiards". I guess the name just kind of fit perfectly and it took on its new meaning once the site started gaining international interest and Mike started reporting on pool all over the world.
