I have a Joe Porper Model B lathe with Bison 3204 3 jaw chuck. Question? In the pic below,.. what is the purpose of the 3 set screws on the back? I took one out and you can see it in the picture..

Why I'm asking? My run out used to be about 3 thousands and recently it got much worse. So I ordered and replaced the bearings,.. and the run out didn't get any better (it's 8 thousands :-( so I took the back of the chuck off and noticed that one of the three screws was set much deeper than the other two. Are these set screws used to somehow adjust the run out??

I tried calling Joe Poper 800 number for help last week but I always get a busy signal,.. and I've tried searching the internet with not luck. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,

Joe Wagner

when you take the screws out the 3 gears will come out and you can clean it real good. the depth of the screws has nothing to do with run out, just snug the up when you put it back together

When you put the chuck onto the backplate, you may be able to position it to the best position and minimise the run out.
