BK 2 vs. BK 3

For those of you who have played (broken) with both the BK2 & the BK3, what are the performance differences (good and bad) between them?

Also, which one do you prefer and with grip or without?

Thanks,

JoeyA

BK2 wrapless.

It's cheaper.
You can find one used even cheaper.
It doesn't have fancy carbon fiber doodads.
Rubber grips are nice, but don't last.

i have had both and IMHO the BK3 is far superior. I have the sport wrap and I like it.

I have broken with many BK2's some with wraps others without.
Cannot break with linen wrap, always afraid the cue would fly away.
Some were much better than others.

I have BK3, without the wrap. BK3 is stiffer than BK2 which has a softer hit.
I like the taper of BK2 shaft better.

I don't see much difference in breaking power between better BK2's and BK3.

Wrapless for sure. As stated earlier bk3 is stiffer than bk2. I like the bk3 more than the bk 2. Can squat the cue ball better and the ease of adjustable weight is nice to easily find optimal weight for break type. As far as power no difference but better control with bk3 for me.

Hi JoeyA!

I'm playing with the BK3 since a year now, and I found it not easy to adjust to. At least not like the BK2!
let me explain: the BK2 is a nice, well made well working break cue, which feel almost like a normal cue, just a bit stiffer and "ready o work"

The BK3 is a different beast. It's stiffer, lighter, and need less power to achieve a good spread of balls.
Balance point is moved forward, so different grip and follow trough.
Add power on break, and white comes hard to control. It need a certain speed to produce a great result, but if you hit whit wrong speed, or if your break is unconsistant, you might encounter poor results.
And of course, you need a center hit on cueball , or withey will take off!!

As for the grip, I sweat a lot, so the sport grip works for me, but it's a detail.

Hope this help, and of course all above is just my humble opinion! ;)

Have a great one!

Joey;

I can't comment on the bk3 since I have never hit with one.

I do use a bk2, however, as my breaker and it breaks fantastic *BUT* I am completely unhappy with the undependable uni-loc joint used on these. It constantly needs to be re-tightened. In fact, part of my pre-break routine is always making sure it's tight.

Can anyone tell me, have they corrected this joint problem on the bk3?

best,

That's part of my routine with every uni-lock.

They're both fine break cues. The 3 makes me feel like I'm hitting them harder but I couldn't tell you why.

Kickn' Chicken - Wolven

Thats funny have never thought of that before but I also tighten the bk2 joint every break. Just a pre-break routine for me but the uni loc joints do tend to loosen.

OP

I have a hard time with the bk3 because I like to hit the rack hard. Cant do this with the bk3. The bk3 works really well though for players who cant break hard. I prefer the bk2 for more of a "feel" thing. I like hearing the rack get crushed and coming back to the table with my shooting cue. I have a feeling I will eventually move on naturally to either a bk3 or a mezz.

hope my opinion helps you

Thanks to everyone who wrote!

Has anyone tried changing the phenolic tip on the BK3?

I have a BK2 with one of those hard tips from North Dakota. I forget the name but I can break fine on the bar tables but am currently using a LD Diamond Wood Break cue and am always thinking about tweaking my break with equipment.

I have used the Break Rak to tweak my break but haven't had it out in the past few months. Might be time to test out my speed. Control isn't a problem. Speed is slow 19-20. But I blame mismatched ball sets and racking poorly on my poor breaking with the 9 foot tables. :D

Thanks again for all of the great suggestions and replies.

Tip, like all of our equipment, as you know, Joey, are all subjective.

However, whenever the threads come up about 'best' break tips, the following 2 seem to take the top spots.

for leather: Samsara (slightly less pop, but a little more control)

for phenolic: Whit Diamond (slightly less control, a little more pop)

I use the White Diamond on my bk2, same one for 4 years with very little sign of wear. I can control it fine and it breaks big.

Just have to keep that uni-loc tight.

and, fyi, I am aware of other makers using unilocs that don't get loose, like for instance, the ones used on Gulyassy breakers.

best,
brian kc
