Bludworth pin-size

In what situation might a non-standard pin be a compromise? Off hand I can't think of one.

Sorry, I said that standardized components may be a compromise in some situations. I know there have been situations in machines that I design and build where I wish I had an 'in between' thread, although mostly with respect to the major or minor diameter, not the pitch.

Metal lathes have been used to cut threads ever since Maudsley, and if you can cut threads then creating a tap is a relatively small step, especially if the tap is to be used for an easy-to-cut material like wood. Tapping stainless, titanium, and other tough-to-cut materials are another story. Of course the value in doing this may not be there for a $50 repair. But it can be done if one is motivated.

I tend to agree that the difference between a pitch of 11tpi, 11.5tpi, and 12tpi should be pretty minimal. The difference in thread width on these pitches is only about 0.004" (11 to 11.5, or 11.5 to 12 .... from 11 to 12tpi is about 0.008" ) ! I can see the ~40 thou difference in major diameter having some effect on the collar as it is a more significant difference.

Of course I know more about threads than I do about playing pool and cues, so take all this with a grain of salt.

Difficult would be having to buy a 'special tap' or rigging your lathe to grind an oddball pitch. If the pitch is standard, it's a snap to grind perfect threads.
So the odd threads are created to sell taps?

No Sir:
The odd threads create individualism, the choice is still yours to adapt to it because you are sure not going to change it.

And cuemakers!

I have yet to hear any argument that says .445 difference in thread pitch affects ANYTHING.

Why make it difficult? That is the original question I asked and have yet to hear a straight answer to.

What problem?
I'm the cue maker, and I know what's best for my style of cue construction, the consumer does not. If he did, he would build them his way.

Someone mentioned that the consumers are asking about pins, most do not know anything about pins and how important the pin is for hit , feel, balance, ect. They heard someone mentioned a big pin is better. They for the most part are on track, wanting a larger pin. I believe my pin is the right weight, size, and lenght for my cues. Like I said before, it works for me. If you guys can't adjust to building a shaft for my cues or any other ODD BALL PIN,, you need to take lessons, from someone, guys...

Your question above, {a straight answer}, about the .455 thread pitch, the configeration of the pitch, dia. and lenght makes plenty of differance. As does all parts of any cue.

Make a change from your standard construction methods, and see what you get. A differant hit, feel, balance, and so on........

If I took something that was standard, and built my cues with these standard parts, I would now have sub-standard cues, that wouldn't play as well as my cues do with my ODD BALL parts.

AGAIN, I build them my way and you and the rest who can't grind threads, send them to a cue maker who can, or build a
tool for grinding threads.

I built a grinding tool from a 16 penny nail years back. Bent the end and ground it to fit the thread pitch, put it in my router and made some pretty nice threads with it. Just use your brain, and get to work. Easy as all get out.

Arnot is pretty a sharp guy, and has the equipment and know how, to grind ANY THREAD. If I was in Flordia and needed help, Arnot would help in a heart beat. He wouldn't be concerned about pitch and dia., he would just fix the problem.

Hey, ever wonder WHY we all drive differant cars?????
Why not go STANDARD, and all drive the same car, same color, same type tires, seats, ect. Sounds good to me..........then we would be like china.

Why should Blud, (or any cue maker), have to justify their preferences to anyone but himself? Should all of us use the same pin so the cue owner can bastardize our product by having a different cue maker make new shafts for the cue? I think not. The original maker usually gets credit or blame for a replacement shaft. Do any of you want to take the gamble on which you get?
many thanks, to you sir, and Mike Webb.

I am trying to figure out the difficult part, The choices are you either choose to work on another cue or you don't, If you choose to, then you have to pay to acquire the right tooling for that cue whether you get it from the cue maker who designed it or you have it made elsewhere, of course the elsewhere is usually more expensive. They are pretty simple choices.
right on Mike. I feel as you, if they don't like the pin, it's easy, pass up the work, or just get back to work. very easy choices.

Joey, Just wondering if you ever got your own shop up and running? Last time we spoke about it was a couple yrs back.
I'm just now getting back to work. Got a couple new machines in the works. My new lathe is still in the works also, just have to take some time to build it.
hope all is good with you and your family.

I think you may be giving to much credit to the consumers. I can't see how all cue customers know what pin sizes are common or uncommon. Remember that the AZ billiards membership represents the lunatic fringe of pool players.

There are more threadforms than you can shake your stick at, just ask fans of British autos and motorcycles ;) . If you really care, a few calculations and a custom change gear or two or three and you too could cut 11.445 tpi threads on your lathe. Heck you could cut 8.84mm x 2.22 thread if you wanted to. It's not rocket surgery or brain science or network engineering or any of that difficult stuff, it's a flipping thread.

Now your on track, Dave. Good thinking on your part.

Standardized parts are a good thing imo, although they may be a compromise in some situations, which is the problem Blud may have seen when he developed his pin.

Dave, who sometimes doesn't understand why people with lathes have these problems
I have wondered about that also. All it takes is changing one gear, put the lathe in BACK GEAR, set your desired pitch, and run the lathe in reverse, put the carriage in gear, and watch it grind nice clean threads. Works for me.

You can come on by any time you want leonard! Susan is doing just fine thank you.
Thanks, and I will be around till it is time to go. I'm looking forward to that too. Ya see leonard, I have spent my life trying to help people less fortunate than myself, including you and (God Bless Her) Janis.
A lot of wonderful things have come my way due to the way I treat others. If you had the slightest, tinyest bit of remorse, I would forgive you and help you again if I could. You just don't you get it buddy. I hope you do someday! That's the honest to God's truth.
Best of Luck On Your Comeback!

To all our friends here at AZ, please forgive me for airing this in public. I have no other options. Im doing my best to not add fuel to the fire.

Mr.Purdy, I have done my best not to get involved with the likes of you.
This pissing contest, does no one any good.
This will be my LAST message to you.

I have done my best to take care of my wife for the last two years. I didn't work for 2 years, nursing Janice.

But you were there causing problems for US all the way, regardless of our situation..

What little bit, of business I was able to generate, helped at lot with no main income. I ask you at that time to knock it off, [[in private and here on az], but you didn't. However you kept hammering me all the way, at every turn, knocked me all the way, while she was very sick.

You sir, showed no compassion toward her or our lives during that time.

Many here on az agreed that you were out of line under the circumstances. I also agree with them. When it really got tough here at home, you showed not one ounce, of respect toward her and my family. No repect at all.

Your remark, [ god bless Janice], if you really meant that now or back then, while she was passing, looks like you would of shown respect to all of us, and done no knocking. I ask you as a gentleman, in the future do not refer to my wife again.

I owe you no appoligie. Your out of line again with your snide remrarks, {come back}, I, never left, sir. I, just nursed my wife for month's, and was proud to of helped her during the process of her passing.

I, come here on AZ, to help others
.
Why not be a gentleman and knock it off. Life is short my friend, stop and smell the roses. As far as me, I will do just fine. I ask as a gentleman, for you to leave me and mine alone. Just put it to bed.

We, as a family do forgive you, for your unkind remarks, and we
wish you and yours all the best.
god bless.

Dear Leonard, I have made a terrible mistake! I have been carrying around resentment for a couple of years now. That is just plain wrong! This is the time and place for me to make things right. I apologize for any mean hurtful things I may have ever said to or about you. I was wrong in doing so and I ask you for your forgiveness. I will never bring up the past nor discuss it with anyone. I hope and pray that your life is filled with happiness, joy and success. I am truly sorry my friend. You are welcome in my home anytime you come up north. I hope to see you at DCC. Dinner is on me and I don't eat on the cheap! Thank you for reading this.

Good mornin Don,
It takes a lot of heart to step up as you have done.

As stated in my eariler e-mail, all is forgiven.

As we all know life has many roads. Some are smooth. some are rough, with many bumps.
When you and Susan were here, at our home 3 years ago, we all had a great time. I just wish Janice was here to read and share your apologie. It would make her very proud to be friends with you.
Life is short, and we all must stop and smell the roses.
All the best to you and Susan. I, look forwad to seeing you folks soon. Dinner sounds great.
god bless, you and yours, Don.

I agree with you Sheldon.

Also, what happens then the cuemaker dies and his customer that he was so concerned about cannot get another shaft for his cue?

Good Cuemaking,
I bought a used Thomas Wayne cue a few years ago and one of the shafts was warped. I didn't realize when I bought the cue that the pin was unusual (I think it was 3/8x11 flat bottom thread if I remember right) and Thomas wasn't making cues anymore. I contacted a few cue makers about making a replacement shaft for my cue and nobody would help me because it wasn't one of their cues and they didn't want to get involved with making a special tap or having one made. I finally found someone who wanted the cue more than I did and he bought it with the warped shaft. I would have hung on to that cue if I could have had a matching shaft made for it, but I didn't know who to contact and at time I wasn't familiar with AZ (if it was around then).

Good Cuemaking,
Nice post, Arnie. I own several cues with non standard pins/joints, that includes Lambros, Cognoscenti, and Bender. Although I like them, I would never buy another cue that had a non standard pin/joint, because I have other cues with standard pins that I like equally well such as Mottey, PFD, Schick, Hercek, Josswest, and Haley. IMO, the joint/pin type just doesn't make that much difference. I know it makes a hugh difference to a lot of players, but not to me. So many other parts of the cue are more important than the joint type. JMO.
