Blue Cloth at the Derby

I haven't had a chance to play on the new blue cloth that is said to help see the balls more clearly (like they used at the US Open). I was just curious if anyone knows if it will be used at the Derby.

It should be. It was Greg Sullivan who chose that particular shade of blue.

It all started at this years Open and it looks like the blue color will take it over sometime in the future. Some colors have more inluence on human behavior than other and I think they trying to figure that out. For example red color realese agression, black takes you down, yellow bring flys, green is excaiting, blue comes you down.

Everything is supposed to be the same as the US open, except the red circle cue ball will be used. Words from Greg's mouth. He was also talking about the pocket tightness.

Funny that this is coming up now, as I was just telling my wife about a blue-cloth table I saw last weekend. I told her that it looked like it would be great to play on because it did not reflect so much light into the players' eyes. The green seems to be almost iridescent and even distorts photos and video somewhat. Love the blue and will put it on my home table (when I can get one!).

On a similar note can anyone tell me what shade of blue they used at this years mosconi cup and world championships in taiwan.

Odds are the cloth from the WPC and the Mosconi cup are the same cloth from the US Open and the 2005 Joss Tour Finale: Tournament Blue Simonis 860

Anybody else try that tour blue on their home tables? I like the way it looks in pictures and I got a sample of it from Simonis. Was leaning toward it, but then I played a few hours on table with blue cloth and felt like I was getting eye strain, no matter what everybody says. It also felt colder somehow ... and considering my room is surrounded by snow a good part of the year, I decided a patch of green was good thing.

Same blue color was used on the diamonds at BCA in Vegas in October. The color seems easy on the eyes--especially with the Diamond lighting. While I'm at it I might as well say I really like playing on Diamond equipment. I've yet to encounter dead or "bouncy" rails like I do on some Brunswick equipment.

I like the blue they used in the US Open.

Greg was also talking about how much room the rack should have on the bottom for the fingers to rest. He certainly is the kind of guy who pays attention to everything.

They used the same blue cloth at the Reno Open in Dec. for the 1st time. It looks like it's here to stay...at least for a while.

i have to agree with Travis. my friend got cloth like this on his table and i thought it was pretty cool until i played on it for a few hours straight. it is way too vibrant. i like dark colors, i don't think anything is better than dark green.

I played on it in Reno. At first I didn't like it at all. It just looked odd to me I guess. After playing on it for a while, I got to where I really liked it. You can see all the balls really well, even the 6 ball stands out.

Did they use that cloth in this past tournament (December) at the Sands?

Though I'd seen the blue cloth on TV before, I think the first time I saw it up front and close was at the $25,000-added Joss Tour Season Finale at Turning Stone Casino.

The theater they held the actual tournament was one of the nicest venues I had ever been to, lots of room between tables, elevated padded seats, FREE bottled water, and a couple of places to purchase cheap eats right on site. When I saw Greg Sullivan of Diamond Tables (and DCC promoter, of course), I grabbed the opportunity to ask him about that blue cloth. I remember I referred to it as "electric blue," the way they really lit up when the lights were dimmed. :p

He told me that studies have revealed that the hue of blue used in the "Tournament Blue" Simonis cloth has been tested to be the best color for the eyes. The tennis courts, which have always been traditionally green, are now using this same color blue because of the excellent visibility for the players.

Here's a picture of Joe Tucker standing in front of a Diamond table with the Tournament Blue Simonis cloth at that Joss event. :)

Yes. They used the Diamond Smart tables too. In the past, they used the older Diamond tables. I didn't feel that these Diamond Smart tables were any better or worse than the older tables. One thing about these Smart tables is that if the balls hang up in the ball return, they're not real easy to get out.

Balls are easy to retrieve from a Diamond Smart Table

The opening to hold the rack at the end of a Diamond Smart Table gives access to the ball return. Merely take a house cue and rake your ball to the center of the table and it will come right out. The usual culprit is a piece of chalk blocking the chute.

Tournament Blue Simonis 860 resulted from a study to find out what color is the background to see pool balls against. When you turn on your computer, the background color is blue (Microsoft paid for the same study.) That color reduces eye strain and allows the players to clearly see the edge of any ball regardless of color. It also improves visibility for televised matches. Greg Sullivan chose this color for these technical reasons. He is color blind and the aesthetics do not matter.

I tried that and it wasn't all that easy. Turns out there was a piece of paper stuck in the seam of the bottom of the table. We had to get under the table and pull the paper out.

Btw, I played Greg Sullivan 1h in a tournament and he beat me pretty good. The guy has some great moves. Buddy Hall beat him in that same tournament. Greg is a real nice guy too.
