Bob Frey

New Bob Frey Custom

Gave the cue its first table time yesterday. 14 hours of one pocket. It shoots lights out, well until about the 11th hour... then I forgot how to pull the trigger!

From an aesthetic view, the Woim described best as the cue has a "simple elegance." The rosewood is very beautiful as well, though it doesn't show like the maple in the pictures. The veneers are jump off the cue. This is also the only Frey cue I've seen that doesn't have the "F" stamped on the butt cap, instead it is signed "Bob Frey" between points. This was a request of mine, as I associate the stamped initials with Tim Scruggs. The brass rings are very simple, but look really really nice. Maybe I've just caught the olympic fever, and I like seeing the golden colored rings on the cue.

The cue weights 19 oz, haven't weighed myself... but it seems like it weighs a tad more as it just feels a bit heftier. As with all Frey cues I've played with, the cue is very neutrally balanced. This is what I prefer, I don't like steel jointed front heavy cues. I have 2 Frey SPs, a recently made ebony one, and one from the early 90s with piloted true sneaky joint. Of all 3 cues, the custom by far has the stiffest hit, and best feedback. Both shafts of are of very high quality. It came with sniper tips.

This cue is an all around winner. I was very nervous with the style of cue that I wanted, afraid that I would just end up with a really fancy sneaky pete. That did not happen, and I am very happy with this purchase. I don't know what Bob Frey's current wait time is on a custom cue. When I ordered my cue I was told it would be done it three months. It was finished and delivered two weeks early. I have no concerns on the delivery time as long as I get a kick ass cue... but just want to bring it up because so many cue maker posers are lurking around claiming a great cue in 90 days or less. Unfortunately for them they didn't apprentice with Tim Scruggs, and generally don't deliver close to stated delivery date. Note, this is only select two or so... I've heard nothing but good things about Michael Webb's cues. In addition I have all my repair done by Dick Neighbors, and he is a class act.

Oh and yes, I hate wraps.

he actually lives about 20 minutes from my house. his shop is in his basement, and i've been there a few times over the years to get shafts turned down and retipped. I owned one of his sneakys a few years back and absolutely loved it. I had to sell it a few years ago cuz i was doing bad at the time... to this day i regret doing so.

nice cue btw, very reminiscent of timmy's work.

a really good player named Tony Long had one of the fanciest frey's i ever laid eyes on.. flat out beautiful cue.
im sitting here with tony & he's trying to figure out who you are,by the way his playing & break cue look almost like a mirror image. who ever you are tony say's Hi

Hey if Tony still has his very fancy Frey cue post up some pictures. I would love to see it along with any other Frey cues out there.

Thanks

Kevin

Kevin, tony's cues are on loan to another player since he's been hurting himself left & right. We were working in gathersburg,Md a year ago & he totaly wrecked his right wrist, after 2 operations with no luck he finally had the wrist fused(no movement), if that wasnt bad enought, he was patching his roof after that bad storm 4 months ago,on a 30' ladder, he falls off & totally wrecks his ankel & breaks his heel to where it spun 180 degrees. He just got the pins out & has a full metal plate screwed to his ankel for good, he said his pool days are over as is his roof patching days.

The ebony, stained nose veneers cue Nick Serdula had a fews years back was a lights out cue, I beleive it came from Bama and had green & yellow veneers, it was a killer cue.....

You don't see many of Bob's Cue changing hand on this forum. That says something about the cuemakers work.

Ive had 5 of freys sneaky petes

I loved them all, I thought they all played great, I am down to one, a true sneaky pete with the only marking being and F between the points, I would love to get a fancy wrapless Frey cue though so if anybody has one they would like to trade or sell please PM me.

Go the wrapless Frey!

You can't go wrong with a wrapless frey. I love my 4 veneer wrapless frey, its a keeper.

Someone offered me an 11-5 spot with 500 against my early 90's Frey SP the other day. It was easy money, as I know if anything I should have been giving up the spot as 1 pocket is all I play... we played 2 matches before he offered the spot, as he came up and asked if I wanted to play some one pocket for a dollar a game. I said sure, dumped two games and tried to raise the bet while getting a spot. Then he came up with the 11-5 for 500 against my cue.

Would have been easy cash... but for some reason the very slight chance of losing my frey cue I couldn't take. And it just rattled my nerves a bit, just seemed like bad mojo to put your cue on the block especially if you got cash instead. But all this guy wanted was to give up a big spot and cash against the cue. I declined... It also seemed to be a poor bet, as I've never seen the guy play before the two previous games... and the guy goes from 2 one dollar games, to giving me an 11-5 spot for 500 hundred against my cue.

Another thing on Frey cues... I have three, a recent ebony SP with the big pin, the aforementioned early 90's honest(no joint collars) SP, and the custom wrapless that is in my avatar. Even with the SP with the wood to wood 5/16th 14 joint, people still walk up and remark on how nice that cue looks... and it is supposed to be a SP with no joint collars, etc...

After using Frey cues for a while now, the only thing I can suggest for any potential buyer is I'd request ivory ferrules. I've had a couple ferrules on my Frey shafts that just won't come clean. I mean the ferrule will have a very very slight shading to it, nothing that effects the play... it is just an aesthetic thing. I had the ferrules changed to ivory on one of my SP shafts
and loved it. So I had the ferrules changed on both of the shafts of my Frey custom. Ferrules were changed by Dick Neighbors, as he does great work and lives close by. Would have sent the shafts back to Bob, to change ferrules... but I try to avoid mailing cues as much as possible(especially after seeing the barnhart cue broken in half!)

I have a coco SP and I love it. I have tried a lot of different cues and nothing compares to the hit... bob is the man!

How can you go wrong with a Frey cue? After all, he worked with Tim Scruggs for years, and made many of the finest Scruggs Sneaky Pete cues out there. I spoke to Bob once on the phone, and do plan to order one of his cues in the future, as well as a cue by Keith Josey. I've never hit with either, but trust the favorable consensus of those who have commented here on AZ Billiards, as well as other forums.
