Bob frey's with 314

Im about to order a 314 shaft for my bob frey sp from seyberts. Does anyone out there have this combination? if so do you like it?...the 3/8 10 will fit my butt right? and will it fit flush with the butt?
Frey's hit to good for a shaft like that. I had a tiger x on mine for about a month then I sold the tiger and went back to the regular shaft.

If at all possible send the butt of your cue to Seyberts & have KJ match the shaft to your cue. Especially since you want the shaft turned down to 12.25mm. Nothing like guessing at your joint diameter & being disappointed when it doesn't fit exactly.

Yes I want a single black collar, with the shaft being 12.25 instead of 12.75.
I know its a 3/8 10, but im not sure of the joint dia. How would i go about measuring the joint? or does anyone know the joint diameter on a freys bocote sp?

wouldn't turning the shaft down void the warrantee?

Turning the shaft below 12.25 mm on the 314 & 11.40mm on the Z will void the warranty.

Anything at or above is ok even though Predator doesn't recommend turning down the shafts.

For pete's sake

You take a ruler, any ruler, and measure the diameter of your shaft at the joint at the end. Now, that was hard, wasn't it?

I bought some 6" Calipers off the net for $6 plus shipping, and carry them in my case just to settle tip arguments between players.

If your too cheap to drop 6 bucks on a pair of calipers, just go to a local university's anthropology department and ask a professor if they could measure the diameter of your joint. They'd probably look at like your a fool, but they'd do it I'd imagine. As an archaeologist, we use calipers all the time to measure things such as the minimum and maximum thickness of prehistoric ceramics, the width of the notch on side and corner notched projectile points(among all sorts of other details of pp/k's), etc... and they'd probably have some really sensitive calipers...

I suppose I could do the same, being an archaeologist and seeing the fact that I have a pair of digital calipers and a Bob Frey SP. But I don't know the consistency of joint diameters across his cues. In addition, I have a 13 mm shaft, and my cue is much newer than yours... so I don't know if the measurements would be consistent.

Scott, if it helps, I have an early Frey, from his days in Tim's shop, no joint collars. I have an original 314 with a 3/8x10 with a black collar that I have tried on it, that I bought for another cue. It matches up very well, with a very minimum of diameter difference...less than 1mm overall.
The Frey/Pred combo is OK, but you will lose the Frey hit, which is very firm from my experience. My Pred. has a Moori med. on it. I'm still looking for the perfect tip for the Frey, had a LePro on it when I bought it second-hand, tried a Sniper, but it felt like a dead hit, but did spin the ball better...now I have a Super Molavia med...kinda feels too firm. Scott, you should also weigh your Frey shaft, because, in my experience, the Pred. shafts tend to be consistently lighter than the originals, which will affect the balance of the cue...it will move the balance point closer to the butt. As far as diameter goes, although I don't have calipers, I just tried the Pred. on...the Pred's joint diameter is slightly bigger, but barely noticable on mine, and I don't cue there anyway, so no matter. Anyhow, doesn't hurt to have an extra shaft, and there's nothing really wrong with that combination...but you will probably find yourself going back to the Frey eventually....Good Luck, I'll let you know if I find the perfect tip combo for the Frey.

I play with a 3/8 10 pin, bacote Frey sneaky with a stock 314-2. I played a year with the Frey shaft (13mm sniper tip and ivory ferrule) and it is has an outstanding hit!!! With the 314-2, the hit is not as solid, but it is close. However, my average went up one ball after 16 weeks with the 314-2 ( I am a B player). I find myself able to do some things with english that I could not do before.

I may have the Frey shaft reduced to 12.75 to see if the difference is in the tip size or Predator technology. In the mean time, I am sticking with the 314-2.

IMO... a Predator unilock shaft does not hit near as well as one with the 3/8 10 phenolic insert. You will like the Frey/314-2 combination!!!

Frey / 314

I have a good friend here in Clearwater who bought a 314 (2) for his Bob Frey
and liked it so much that he immediatly had me sell his two Frey shafts and ordered a second 314 (2). Both are the plain black collar and were slightly larger then the joint on the Frey and were very easly taken down to match perfectly
with a minimum of work. He's a very good player and swears the Frey/314 with Sniper tips is the nuts.

My friend used to use his frey sneaky with a 314 but he switched back to the original shaft because it played better for him. The joint is pretty close to a standard preator shaft I dont think it is exactly flush but it is pretty darn close

Form your own opinion

once again it is personal preference which shaft you will play better with. There are replies to this thread on both sides of the fence. I personally have a coco Frey with a 1st Gen 314 that I think plays awesome. I've never hit the Frey shaft because I play exclusively with Predators so I can't honestly say which one has a more solid hit. However, I would think that turning the Predator down to 12.25mm will change everything about the feel. As far as the butt and shaft matching, the Predator is slightly larger in diameter. I would try out a stock one to see if you like it before spending extra cash to have one custom matched in my opinion, but it is up to you to form your own...
