Book review - Lessons In 9 Ball

Ernie...What do call this?
Quote from APA7: If U wached Blackjack's video, he don`t have a good power break N he plays near or below UR level Ernie, so take the advice in perspective :o

I understand what you're saying, and agree with you. However, APA7 has gone out of his way to knock Blackjack's ability as a teacher, and to knock his ability as a player, in EVERY post regarding Blackjack, that he has posted on. Do a search of his posts, and see for yourself. He's a self-absorbed jerk, who obviously doesn't know what he's talking about. Why do I care? First, because Dave is a friend of mine...and second, I happen to know he's a first-rate teacher, who knows tons about pool, and shares it willingly with anyone who wants to know!

Whoa, Scott! I don't think Brian was questioning Blackjacks' teaching ability. He was commenting on one facet many would find controversial. As you know, 99% of us put a lot of complex motions into our breaks. For many, it is detrimental to their game, no doubt about it.

My take upon reading this part of the book was that many readers will see this as misguided, initially. Blackjack goes on to defend this style of breaking with many good reasons. My post was not meant as a knock on Blackjacks work in this area.

I don`t think that iz the best breaking advise either. Not if U want 2 power break. Accuracy iz king, but U need power 2.

Tiger Woods can destroy Hank Haney on a golf course any day of the week. Heck, he can destroy anyone on the golf course. He still has a coach. The difference between great and awesome comes down to practice and natural talent. Dave has improved my game immensely over the years. Knowledge should never be passed up on, and Dave is one of the premier teachers on this site. So what if he's not Earl Strickland. I like Dave's way of explaining things better than Earl's way of "just do what I told you".

I agree with the general comments concerning the abilities needed to teach and the abilities need to perform a certain act(s). These abilities aren't inherently the same abilities. When you are seeking instruction, you are seeking instruction, not watching some one else pot balls. You are there to learn what you don't know or relearn some things. The importance of communicating what YOU need from the teacher is also important. After speaking with an instructor you should get enough feedback to determine if this is the instructor you are looking for. Just b/c some one may have given Earl the Pearl a lesson doesn't mean this is a good instructor for YOU.
