Staying at the Westin Boston Waterfront hotel. Any poolrooms close by or within reasonable cab ride? Boston Mass.

Try Flat Top Johnny's in Kendall Square in Cambridge. If you want to make a longer trip, World Class Billiards in Peabody is a great player's room with four nice three-cushion tables.

However.... if you don't get to World Class the second they open, you won't get a 3C table, because the regulars fill them up almost immediately AND you won't get one of the nice GCs either because, at least as I was told on my last visit: "the regulars" paid to have them recovered, so non-regulars can't play on them, so you are relegated to the second level and the not so nice tables. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with any of that -- you're just not going to get on a nice table if you go and are not a regular.

Regular?

I am a regular! Just not there. I was so regular I even bought one of the tables and took it home! Kind of ironic that an establishment that calls itself World Class doesn't take care of their tables and passes that expense on to the players!? Thanks for the input anyway Lou.

The Billiards Cafe in Ayer is very nice, although a bit longish (and pricy) cab ride.

Unfortunately the 2 rooms really worth going to, Boston Billiards and Brighton Billiards have closed.

I am pretty sure Jillian's near Fenway Park is still open, but it was a second class room for players compared to Boston Billiards. And both of those were at least 1.5 levels bellow Brighton.

I've had no such experience at World Class and I just discovered the hall about a month ago. I've been there at least ten times since and I go play on whatever table I feel like. That being said, none of the tables appear to be freshly refelted so perhaps that new period of felt is gone...
I find the Boston pool rooms to be pretty mediocre and expensive so I always make the drive up to World Class. It's a shame there isn't one table worth playing on in Boston or Cambridge...

You could always jump the "T" train from N. Station (Boston Garden) to Ayer to get to Billiard Cafe. The train station I believe is right across the street from the billiard room. I think a train ride will cost less then $20.00 RT

Well don't get me wrong -- it's a great crew there and I got to play with the 3C crowd and the 9ball crowd on the nice tables. They're all very friendly and accommodating. I even got some 1pocket action, though there they call it "pocket a piece." Once we got past that it was copacetic.

My experience was on two separate trips a couple of years ago. The first time I was told it was just for the first six months, after the tables had been redone and I said fine. I come back a year later and it's the same drill. Nowadays, maybe the regulars got tired of paying for the cloth?

You're right, the train is right across the street.

They also just put in a brand new 7" Diamond with tournament blue Simonis. Did not try it out yet, but I looked it over and it looks flawlessly installed. Worth the ride IMHO to head there.

If you are around for a bit, send me a PM, I'll do some negotiating with the wife and meet you there to play. They have some decent players there, but if you are looking to play for even a bit of money for fun, you won't find anyone looking to play. The most I have seen is partners 3-6-9 for $1 a ball. I have never been able to get a one on one game there even for $5 bucks a set hehe.

There used to be a place in South Boston (Quincy) that was a nice room. It was owned by an older player and he had specials in the day time. I do not know if it is still there. I think it was struggling when I left Boston.

I have played at World Class for the past 5 years. I am not as regular a customer as I would like, but I know most of the repeat offenders. I've never heard about regulars paying for cloth and I have never been kept off an open table. League play has taken over the lower level on week nights. There are not the same number of frequent customers that went to World Class as there were 2-3 years ago. Much harder to find a pick-up game. I was there just less than 2 weeks ago and the cloth was not new. FYI, there are only three 3C tables. The fourth was in the lower level and was almost never used.

Still the best pool hall in North Boston.
