I will be spending some time there soon, and was wondering if anyone could suggest a good place to play. I will be staying near Copley Place, but I will also have a car, so proximity is not a terribly big issue for me.

No place to play around Copley Place I know of. Boston Billiards is over by the Fenway Park area. Flattop Johnny's in Cambridge was good once, I don't know now. Renaissance in Quincy, I think they recently started a Thursday night tournament. Short drive from Copley to Renaissance, but admittedly tricky, got a GPS in the rental? If you want to drive further Silver Cue in Woburn. Still further, Country Club in Chelmsford (that's a long ride).

there's kings which is a bowling room with some pool tables. there's also jillian's.

the pockets at boston billiards are huge but they have a really cheap rate on pool during the weekdays.

Yes, I will have my handheld GPS with me, and Renaissance sounds like it might be a possibility. I noticed that the Thurs. tournament at Renaissance is handicapped; do you know if it's an open tournament, or if it's limited to B players?

I'm not sure, due to my work I'm out of town weekdays now. When I last played there, in their old tournament I don't remember a restriction. "Dave From Boston" you following this thread? Do you know?

My understanding of the Renaissance tourney is that anyone can play. I know that Joey Dupuis was playing there, and he is certainly no B player. I think they would handicap you pretty high if you are new. Joey was going to 8 (which would be for an A or Open player). B's might range from 5-7, C's from 3-5. This is just a guess. The room isn't bad, although last time I was there the tables were in rough shape.

Country Club USA is a really nice room with excellent tables. Might be worth the drive. They occationally have good players hanging out and playing there.

The Silver Cue in Woburn isn't nearly as nice as the other two, but the tables play quite well. If you are a "player", Mark will give you a perfectly cleaned set of Aramith Pro Cup balls, and its fast Granito cloth. Very enjoyable to play on.
