Do you know if he did the splice, or did he use a "blank"?

I doubt there were too many people selling blanks in the 50s and very early Sixties. Burton Spain started later than that, I believe.

That is true - but I was using 'blank' in the more general sense, i.e., early
on George used Titlist, Hoppe, and even Rambow cues as blanks for his custom cues.

The pictured cue looks much like one made by Katz during that era,

IMHO - based on what I have seen of the Rich products, I would think
it unlikely he built any kind of butterfly splice.

That is why I asked.

Still, it is an "historically interesting" piece, and I'd love to have a dozen or so.

I've never seen a Rich family butterfly either, but this one is in the Rich family so I trust it as absolutely genuine. I'd love to see the cues Issy made for Fred Astaire and Jackie Gleason.
