Box cues

I am planning on having a cue maker make a box cue for me.

Assuming I am a cuemaker would charge $2K for a 4 point 4 venner cue, what would you expect to pay for a veneered box cue?

Pics with examples would be good.

Thanks,

Ken

Ken, that's a hard question to answer. a close representation of the design you're thinking of and the materials you want used to create it would help along with the makers you'ld be soliciting to perform the work ect....

Call Tim Scruggs

1-410-247-1234
I think he charges between $200.00 and $300.00 extra to the price of his veneer cues to do boxed veneers. I might be off a little on the pricing but that is what I seem to rember the price being. You will probably want to choose veneer colors and designs too! There shouldn't be much of a problem to have your custom cue built to your exact wishes.
God luck
Nick :)

The stick you mentioned, is very similar to "Alberta", the cue stick that Scott Bakula used in the Quantaum Leap episode, "Pool Hall Blues".... I'll try and get a good picture of it, as I have that episode, I'll try and get a video still and post it up on here :)

Willie

P.S. They are very sweet cues :D

sorry about that, i thought you wanted a "box cue". now i understand it's a box veneered cue. sorry. i still would contact different makers but Nick is probably close for some makers but i would guess a little more than that for the ones who do it well.

Images of "Alberta" pool cue, from Quantum Leap

Here's probably the 2 best images that I could get of this cue stick, as in the series episode, there wasn't any close enough camera angle showing the entire butt of the cue stick, and so, I just tried the best I could :)

I do know, that in the episode Al (Dean Stockwell) mentions, that it is 21oz in weight made with Ebony and inlaid with MoP, but the this cue stick is a mystery as I can't even find out who made this cue to try and get better pictures of it.

Oh well, I liked the challenge of finding a few good pics at least :)

Yep, thats what I am talking about...

The ones noted are what I had in mind. I sent my down payment to a cuemaker with a 5 year wait and told him I just wanted a standard 4 point, 4 veneered cue, and after a year and half wait I think I want this cuemaker to make a box veneered cue.

I am sure he hasnt even thought about my cue, but I wanted to know if the cost of changing might be another 1-2K over my initial cue cost.

So my question if I can get my original cue for approximately 2K, is the reasonable upcharge another $1000?

I have bought several cues over the years but never one of this type.

Thanks, and I hope I made myself clear.

Ken, if you are just talking about boxing in the veneers, I would consider $1000 an very UNREASONABLE upcharge for just that....but that's just me. I would think $400 or so maybe.

I think he's talking about veneered windows in the fore and butt type of "box" cue.

Yes, I see that now....confusing thread. Yes, $1000+ upcharge is reasonable from an upper tier cuemaker.

I just told you

You should only have to pay between $50.00 and $75.00 to bridge between each points veneers. I am pretty sure Timi will do them in a custom ordered cue for $2100.00. Your wait might be alot shorter too!
Call if you don't believe me!

i bet its a joss. i seen a few old joss cues with dark forearms and light buttsleeve and BOXES:D

I paid $3400 for this from Paul Mottey a few years ago. I suppose $4300 - $4500 wouldn't be far off the mark these days.

That is one sick stick there Si :D, is that flame maple that's been used for the main forearm and butt sleeve? :)

Si, I'm gonna have to have a serious chat with you, because I'm slowly turning into another cue freak and you're not helping matters :P :D lol

For some reason, it wouldn't suprise me if it is a Joss, especially since his cues were quite popular around the late 80's :)

This is a close copy of the Ed Kelly Ginacue. JOSSWEST made similar copies of this cue, and others have as well. I think JOSSWEST only made like 2 or 3 around 30 years ago. A guy around here named PENNY owns one of the original Josswest Gina styled cues, and had Bob Frey make an exact duplicate for him to use as a daily player that is phenomenal (and exact to the original)!

Joss made a N-20 I believe in his 95 series (see bottom cue on attachment), that was similar, meaning, inspired by this design, but not as fancy or exact. See attached photo. I've also attached a photo of the original GINACUE, (Thanks Fast N' Loose) so you can compare.

Also, looking through my collection of flyers/adds I see that in the 90's Schon produced an LTD-289 that was titled the "Ed Kelly" model. I've seen one on ebay for big bucks, and it is strongly influenced by the GINA but no where near a duplicate. Schon also put out an LTD 221 that is similar to the 289, but I actually think it looks CLOSER to the Gina in design. Real beautiful work.

Ed Kelly, now there's a legend if I ever heard of one :)

I see what you mean about it being a copy of the original, the only differences in the pics of the copy cue, are the s s joint, and the bushka rings, but the copy isn't consistent with it's design, as the joint collars are a different design, from the bushka ring at C, whereas the original has the consistency in the pattern of it's design :)

What a sweet cue stick, I'll bet it has a hansom ransom attatched price tag too, but well worth every dime, I would imagine :)

I've a long way to go yet, I've still got my "L" plates on :D lol

Nice, I wasn't sure if it was Amboyna Burl or Flame Maple :), but it's a sweet cue stick, especially with the ebony windows accented by the holly and ebony veneers :D

I have a few cues in mind, that I would love to have them made, but not unless I'm able to get some employment and some serious $$$$ soon :) lol, 1 of which has a nice widow/box design :)
