Break Cues

Everybody has their idea on what is the "best" this or that. The only thing that matters is what works best for you and your break style.

I have owned everything from a Lomax to a Gilbert, to an Omen...ect. Prices range from 575-200. Today I use a Pechauer because I feel it works best for me.

I would venture to say if you spend a fair amount of money for a quality break cue with a Samsara tip, you will have a nice combo no matter which you pick.

I'm currently breaking with a cheap Players cue I got for free. I put a Samsara break tip on it and it did the job fairly well. It's failings could be laid directly on my inconsistent break stroke. Predictably though I cracked the ferrule and then had a one piece phenolic ferrule/tip put on. (Worth more than the cue I think)

I can get plenty of action on the break with this combo sending sometimes five or six balls to the other half of the table in 9 ball. With the phenolic tip I find that it's harder to control the cue ball and I mis-hit the cue ball way to often when I stray off center. I guess my point is I think it has more to do with the tip/ferrule combination than the actual cue.

I may of course be wrong because I've never broken with a high end break cue like a Lomax, Mezz or others of similar quality.

I did however just take a chunk out of the phenolic tip somehow so I was looking at replacing the cue and hope to gain some knowledge from this thread also.

Best cue for the money: J&J Jump Break
Most popular break cue: Predator BK2

Do a search, there is a thread like this every few weeks.

Ive had a few lower end break cues, a mcd and a j&j, but the best results ive had so far was with the cheapest set up. I bought a 40 dollar 21 oz lucky cue on ebay, and a 8 dollar g10 tip/ferrule combo. Paid my tip guy 10 bucks to install it and it was a monster breaker. Ive you have any decent break power though you'll have to make sure you hit dead center or your cue ball will kill the guy shooting next to you

break cue

am trying an Alex Brick. pretty solid. I think after you spend $200 or so, they are all about same, it's matter of what you like and technique. buy what calls out to you. take a lesson.

I miscue a lot with the phenolic tip on the bk3. only played with it on 3 separate days though. I use to break with my playing cue with ob classic shaft and never miscue.

I've used a lot of break cues, trying this one and that one, but I've finally found what I'm looking for.

MEZZ PB2 is the nuts. They are pricey, but man, it's does the job and then some. To put in perspective, I'm not longer looking or trying any other break cues, EVER. I'm done, this is it, I found it :)

I've collected quite a few jump/break. break, and jump cues over the years.
There are so many good ones out there, it comes down to cost, the tip, hype, whatever.
If you are just looking for a break cue that is considered to be the best from a custom standpoint, I would say Steve Lomax.
Unfortunately I sold my Lomax un-hit because a friend really wanted it, and I kept the matching jump cue which is still un-hit.

I always liked the original Stingers by Jerico, Terry McFadden builds a terrific j/b for a very reasonable price, and I am currently using an Ernie Martinez jump/break.

For the dough, you can't go wrong with the J&J imports, or something similar.
There are several out of China that have proven to be quite good, and some have lasted for years.

I had a mike gulyassy orange crusher and loved it. I was in need of some cash so I sold it. Interestingly enough i bought it back from the same guy then hit a rough spot again so I sold it again. I used the poison vx and its crushes racks pretty well also. I toyed with a Joss Thor Hammer and that too was a nice break cue. Traded that to the guy I had sold the orange crusher to so imagine that I got it back. I finally sold it for the last time to a teammate of mine because I am doing what many have called crazy or insane or any other adjective that would by synonymous with such. I am having Steve Klapp convert a white oak titlist into a break cue.
