Break/Jump Cue Construction

Coos Cues
I am building a couple simple break/Jump cues for the first time.

Do you guys turn down the two butt pieces to final size individually and then install the joint pin and insert as you would a butt and shaft or install the joint and turn it down as one piece.

That is assuming after installing the joint it's dead nuts straight screwed together. Which I expect these to be as they had no wobble before I cut them in half and I'm just rejoining them at the cut precisely as I would a shaft. But I have carbide mandrels for the shaft size and not here.

They are about .050 OS right now.

Thanks,

Since you live thread, JC, you should be able to turn them down really close to finish size and then, if necessary, light sand to blend them, It is harder to install the pin on the larger piece and then turn down and hold the center so that the cue doesn't have a wobble when you unscrew it. Hope that is not too confusing.

If your parting tool is thin, cut them after you're at final size. No sense turning them separately, imo. If the join pin for the shaft is installed, just make sure the back of the butt is faced, and put some threads there so you can screw an extension onto it for your rear lathe chuck to get ahold of. I have a (straight) junk shaft with 5/16-18 threads with small piece of threaded rod to do this. You can hold the forearm piece with a shaft that fits whatever pin you're using.
