Here are some aggregate break statistics from the 2026 U.S. Open Pool Championship played August 25-30, 2026 at the Embassy Suites in Frisco, Texas. Pay-per-view streaming was provided on wnttv.com. This was a 256-player 9-Ball event, produced by Matchroom Sport. Francisco Sanchez-Ruiz won the tournament, defeating Robbie Capito in the final match.

The event was double elimination down to the final 64 players, 32 from the winners' side and 32 from the one-loss side. It was then single-elimination play to the conclusion. Races were of 4 different lengths during the 6 days -- to 8 in the first 3 rounds on the losers' side, to 9 for all other rounds up to the Last 64, to 10 for the Last 64 round through the semifinals, and to 13 for the finals.

On the matches I watched:
• commentators -- Phil Yates, Karl Boyes, Scott Frost, and Jeremy Jones. Joe Rogan sat in for 1.4 matches;​
• referees -- Marcel Eckardt and Ben Taylor-Fuente;​
• announcer/interviewers -- Natalie Pike and Jack Mitchell;​
• master of ceremonies -- Antonio Perkins​
• singer of Star Spangled Banner on Sunday -- David Tribble​

Conditions -- The conditions for these streamed matches included:
• Diamond 9-foot table with 4" corner pockets;​
• CPBA Royal Apex Series cloth;​
• Dynaspheres Titan Series balls with a black-rotor-shaped-spots cue ball;​
• Magic Ball Rack racking template;​
• referee racks with the 9-ball on the foot spot and the 2-ball on one of the wings or in the back location;​
• winner breaks from behind the head string in a box approximately 8" to either side of the long string;​
• no illegal-break rule, but referees are to enforce a forceful-break requirement;​
• 30-second shot clock (60 sec. after the break or a push out), with one 30-sec. extension per player per rack;​
• foul on all balls;​
• 3-foul rule in effect (no violations);​
• jump cues allowed;​
• all slop counts; and​
• lag for the break in each match.​

These stats are for all 12 matches (198 games) played on the feature Table 1, with commentary, in the single-elimination portion (Stage 2) of the event -- 7 matches on Friday in the Last 64 through Last 16 rounds, and 5 matches played from the Quarterfinals to the end on Saturday and Sunday. These 12 matches are listed here in the order in which they were played.

Therefore, whereas the breaker won 64% (127 of 198) of all games,​
He won 70% (117 of 166) of the games in which the break was successful (made at least one ball and did not foul).​
He won 31% (10 of 32) of the games in which the break was unsuccessful (fouled or dry).​

Break-and-run games -- The 59 break-and-run games represented 30% of all 198 games, 46% of the 127 games won by the breaker, and 36% of the 166 games in which the break was successful (made a ball and didn't foul).

The 59 break-and-run games consisted of one 6-pack (by Gorst), one 4-pack (Van Boening), two 3-packs (both by Capito), nine 2-packs, and 25 singles.

9-Balls on the break -- The 59 break-and-run games included just one 9-ball on the break (0.5% of all breaks).

Miscellany from the data for the 2026 U.S. Open Pool Championship (9-Ball):
[This relates only to the 12 streamed matches I watched, not to all matches in the event.]

■ The most balls made on a single break was 3, done 7 times The breaker won 5 of those 7 games, 3 by B&R.

■ The average number of balls made on the break was 1.2 (this includes dry and fouled breaks). On successful breaks (made at least one ball and did not foul), the average was 1.3, and the distribution was 73% 1 ball, 22% 2 balls, and 4% 3 balls.

■ Number of innings:
• 43% (85 of 198) of the games ended in one inning – 59 games on the breaker's first inning (B&Rs) and 26 games on the non-breaker's first inning.​
• 29% (58 of 198) of the games ended in the second inning.​
• 28% (55 of 198) of the games went beyond the non-breaker's second visit to the table. The game with the most visits to the table ended on the non-breaker's 8th visit.​

■ 35% (69 of 198) of the games were run out by the player who was at the table following the break. These run-outs were:
• By the breaker after successful breaks (B&R games) – 36% (59 of 166)​
• By the non-breaker after fouls on the break – 50% (6 of 12)​
• By the non-breaker after dry breaks – 20% (4 of 20)​

■ The player who made the first ball after the break:
• Won the game in that same inning 64% of the time (127 of 197)​
• Won the game in a later inning 16% of the time (31 of 197)​
• Lost the game 20% of the time (39 of 197)​
[Note -- total games used here are 197 rather of 198 to eliminate the 1 game in which no ball was made after the break.]​

■ The loser won an average of 5.7 games in the 11 races to 10 (excludes the longer final). One match went to hill/hill; the most lopsided was 10-1.

■ The average minutes per game for all 12 matches was 6.8. The elapsed time was measured from the lag until the winning ball was made, so it includes time for racking, player timeouts, and commercial timeouts (last match).

■ The race to 10 that was longest in elapsed time, at about 134 minutes, and highest in average minutes per game, at 7.4, was Capito d. Gorst 10-8. The final match, with 7 commercial breaks, was 210 minutes, or 8.4 minutes per game.

■ The match that was shortest in elapsed time, at about 68 minutes, was Van Boening d. Baoanan 10-1. The match lowest in average minutes per game, at 5.5, was Filler d. Holem 10-3.

■ Breaking fouls averaged 1 for every 16.5 games, other fouls 1 for every 6.4 games, and missed shots about 1 for every 2.0 games.

■ One or more safeties were played in about 48% of all games and in 68% of games that were not B&Rs.
 
2025 vs. 2026

How do the stats compare for this year's US Open versus those for last year? For both years, my stats are for all matches played on Table 1 beginning with the Stage 2, single-elimination round of the last 64 players. This was 12 matches each year -- 204 games in 2025, and 198 games in 2026. I'm aware of only two differences between the years in rules and equipment -- different brands of cloth and balls (and a different model of the Diamond table).

These stats are for 2025 first, then 2026.

• Successful breaks -- 80%, 84%​
• Breaker won game -- 62%, 64%​
• B&R games on all breaks -- 30%, 30%​
• B&R games on successful breaks -- 37%, 36%​
• Games ending in 1 inning -- 48%, 43%​
• Games going beyond the 2nd inning -- 22%, 28%​
• Runouts by the player at the table following the break -- 38%, 35%​
• Games won by first player to make a ball after the break -- 78%, 80%​
• Games per missed shot (approx.) -- 2.1, 2.0​
• Games per foul -- 5.0, 4.6​
• Matches won by winner of lag -- 58% (7 of 12), 42% (5 of 12)​
• Minutes per game -- 6.9, 6.8​
• Winning 9-balls on the break (% of all breaks) -- 3 (1.5%), 1 (0.5%)​
 
Great effort collating this, thank you for your hard work.

Seems like break success is pretty similar for winners and losers, but what happens after that is very different. Although you are counting break success as potting a ball and not fouling. I'm wondering if the match losers who only won the game on break 52% of the time have the lower stats due to breaking down in the middle of the run, or if they just didn't have a shot on the 2.

As an amateur that plays with the WNT style break rules I don't find potting the 1 that difficult, but I find it impossible to do what the pros do where they pot the 1 and bring the cue ball back to the centre of the table (giving them a better chance of having a shot on the 2).

Not sure if it would be too much work, but would be really interested to see the stats if you were willing to collate them for future tournaments of the % of times the breaker pots on the shot immediately following the break. And also the number of times players played push out shots after the break.

There is obviously a bit of luck getting on the 2 after the break, but I think the elite players can manipulate those odds in their favour better than those lower in the rankings.

Regarding The Shot/Decision after the Break

Here are the counts on offensive vs. defensive play following the break for the 12 matches covered in post #1 above.

• Match winners broke 116 times -- 99 successful (including one 9-ball), 6 fouled, and 11 dry (with no foul).
• Match losers broke 82 times -- 67 successful, 6 fouled, and 9 dry.

So, if we eliminate the one 9-ball on the break (no next shot) and the 12 fouled breaks (BIH for next shot, offensive every time, no missed first shots), we have 107 breaks for match winners (their 98 successful plus match losers' 9 dry) and 78 for match losers (their 67 successful plus match winners' 11 dry) for which they had to decide between offense and defense following the break. Here's the distribution of those 107 and 78 decisions:

Match Winners:
Attempted to pocket a ball -- 65 (61%); [4 misses -- 2 by Sanchez-Ruiz, 1 each by Thorpe and Shaw]​
Played safe -- 20 (19%)​
Pushed out -- 22 (21%)​
Total -- 107​

Match Losers:
Attempted to pocket a ball -- 49 (63%); [10 misses -- 2 each by Capito, Gorst, and Styer, and 1 each by Baoanan, Holem, SVB, and Filler]​
Played safe -- 15 (19%)​
Pushed out -- 14 (18%)​
Total -- 78​

So the percentages of taking a shot, playing safe, and pushing out were all quite close for each group. But the match winners' pocketing percentage when they went offensive [94% (61 of 65)] was quite a bit higher than the match losers' percentage [80% (39 of 49)].

Push outs numbered 38, the 36 shown above by the breaker and 2 more by the non-breaker after dry breaks. Match winners won 50% of the 22 games in which they pushed outs, and match losers won 50% of the 16 games in which they pushed out.
