ok here it goes

i am using a 1 peice phenolic setup on my break cue and i'm not feeling it anymore. i am gonna have a shaft made but i need to know what the specs should be. i am probably gonna use a samsara or white diamond tip but does the ferrule make a difference to anybody? I feel dumb for even asking.

Flatten the phenolic and install whatever tip you want to go with. For what it's worth, I use a Samsara and it breaks excellent. I've also heard great things about White Diamond.

I've done this with two of my inexpensive Action J/B cues to make them BCA legal. Worked out great! The Samsara break tip performs equally as well as the phenolic. Actually better, because you get more cueball control.

Hey FastEddie! :) Can flatten the phenolic and put a Samsara on as suggested or just do what I did ... buy a Mike Gulyassy Orange Crusher break cue which comes with a Samsara. Dang thing is great and Mike is super to deal with. I don't know if his sale is still going on, but he was having a great deal of $125 for his break cue. If you figure the cost of the new tip and the cost of install, you are close to halfway to the cost of the new break cue.

Or just DIY like I did and you only have to buy the tip. Pretty simple to do.

Maniac (does think the Orange Crusher deal is another good way to go)

Just askin...what about using a cue top sander with like 80 grit?

For those of you that do not have a lathe, I used my bench grinder  to remove the dome. Took my time as to not overheat the phenolic. Then I finished it up with the Cue Top Sander tool w/100 grit. Smoothed it up real nice with some 220 grit, and just for giggles, went over it with some 400 grit. Samsara Break tip was installed using 2-part epoxy. I have broke racks and jumped plenty with my cues with nary a problem AND excellent results!!!

Eddie,

A friend of mine has an old Josey that he breaks with. Just has a black ferrule, not sure the material, and a Hercules Hard tip installed. Breaks better than most break cues I have ever hit with.
Ask Mike Webb about it.

On that note, I ordered a case that came with a free Sneaky Pete cue (Sterling). Not needing another cue, I sold it cheap to a friend and he uses it for breaking. It breaks the heck out of a rack just as it is, but he wants me to install a Samsara tip on it eventually. I believe the combination of the wood-to-wood flat face joint/thick shaft taper/and what appears to be a LePro tip on it makes it break so well. The feel is solid and the ball action is excellent.

I am starting to believe that a high dollar break stick is not necessary. If you play around with different joint/tapers/tip combinations on an inexpensive cue, you can find something that offers good breaking and cueball control.

FTR, I have a semi-expensive (Jerico) break cue and while I am not unhappy with its results, I have matched its performance with cheaper cues built for the same purpose.

Just my $.02 worth.

I agree, I have another friend that uses an old cheapy that he put a ferrule and tip on. He loves it.
I have a Fury J/B and it's ok. I love my buddies breaking Josey more than any of them.
