Breaking with a 314shaft

I like breaking with my playing cue, but also have used a predator bk cue that a friend has and i like the way it breaks alot.

Now since i dont feel like dropping 300$ on a predator bk cue. Would a simpler solution be to buy a 314 shaft and just use it on my playing cue to break with?

Also i hear alot from people on AZ that the ferrules on the 314shafts are kinda fragile expecially if you use them to break with and have a hard break.

just kinda looking for some imput on this.

Dave do you play in tournaments, do the RULES say that during a Game if you Break a Cue Down, you are Conceding the Game? Something to think about?

if someone calls you on something stupid like that and the TD upholds it, the tournament isn't worth playing in the first place.

If you break down your cue, you forfeit the match.

While this is true, most tournaments will allow you to break down to change a shaft if you let the player know whats going on and its not being used as a sharking technique. Normally if you tell the other player your gonna change your shaft (when its your turn at the table, not his, so it doesnt look like a shark move) there is never a question on it.

Although I dont think you would want to go through a tourney and have to change shafts every time you break

Of course I could do that, as I dont get to break very often :D

I believe if you unscrew your cue when it is the decisive game and when it is your opponent's turn to shot that you are considered forfeiting the game.

When it is your turn at the table, you are allowed to change your shaft, unscrew your shaft to change to a jump shaft, masse shaft, another playing shaft, switch your cue, unscrew your jump break cue...etc.

You can only bring three cues to the table but you can switch and match the shafts.

This is my understanding.

I agree with Richard. If you are breaking down your cue because you figure the match is over then it's a concession.

What would happen if my opponent had a chip shot on the nine and I broke down my cue and said nice match and then he says that's only 6 I need one more game. Have I just conceeded the match?

I think someone said Earl carries around 19 different shafts in his case and I did see him changing shafts during a match.

A friend of mine used his predator to break with and now he needs to send his shaft out to have a new ferrule put on. His break pushes the ferrule against the cloth so heat may have damaged it instead of the breaking forces.

Spending an extra 100 and getting a new Sledgehammer,Mace,etc... instead of paying 200 for a fragile break shaft might be wiser.

No....a simpler and less expensive solution would be to buy a Fury B/J cue and forget about the other. You'll break better, have no worries, and spend less money.

Are these really as good as everyone's saying?? I'm thinking of getting a break/jump cue and don't want to spend the money for a stinger or something like that.

I use my predator for breaking and know a couple other people that do. I haven't had a problem with mine. The only problem I've heard of is the ferrule mushrooming after a while

Well if i was using the 314shaft i wouldnt change shafts after the break, i would just use the same shaft.

Obviously if i would have problems with the ferrule i could easily just have a new one put on.

or just have a new one put on when i get the shaft lol. And then you dont hafta worry about it.

replacing a ferrule on a predator isn't that easy

Normally I'm all for using playing cues to break with but I've cracked too many ferrules and joint collars to endorse it anymore.

Predator 314s are great, but I cracked my first ferrule after only 6 months of playing / breaking. And most of the time I was breaking at only 75%

I did this to my Predator and I like it a lot. It also jumps really well.

What hasn't been stated yet on this thread is... the taper of a BK 314 shaft is not the same taper as a standard 314. The BK 314 shaft if quite a bit stouter.

I have a BK and like it a lot.

My advice would be to shell out the $300 for the BK ... they're worth it.

The last thing that I want to do is to break down my cue for every break and change shafts... that's just too much of a distraction... especially when you're in the flow/zone.
