breaking with smaller diameter shafts

Is it less effective, or does it depend on your style of breaking? Is it more susceptible to damaging the shaft/ferrule over time?

I wouldn't do it, but I see others do it once in awhile. Many a player has stated that a good Break Cue has a shaft, with a stiff spine. A small diameter shaft doesn't have a spine. A Thin shaft has a smaller tennon in the ferrule, so it can be damaged.

A good Break Cue is about $300.00. That isn't much to spend on a cue that will last you the rest of your life...

NOTE; The Break Shot is "The LINK" between games. Give this shot some real consideration in your practice & in your purchase of equipment. You'll be glad you did.

You should check out the Schuler Super Constant 12mm tip but a heck of a taper on it (parabolic arcs). It has plenty of spine and it is extremely stiff. I believe that the taper of the shaft has more to do with the stiffness and spine of a shaft than does the size of the shaft at the tip.

Depends on your breaking style. My break cue is 12.3mm shafts, I break with more force than anyone in my league but that's because of how I break and not because of the equipment. I can reproduce my break with another cue if I need to. I've had my break cue for over 10 years and its still going strong!

Is a 14mm cue even recommended? I see that for a lot of break cues and it just seems like you wouldn't be able to aim the freaking thing. Lately I've been using my Schon 13mm shaft to break with, then switching to a smaller shaft for regular play, but sometimes I just get lazy or forget and break with the smaller one

I had a Viking J/B at about 13.85mm and I never realized how much I liked it now that it's gone :frown: Right now I'm breaking with an old Viking player with a medium tip at 12.75mm. It's okay for bar box 8-ball but I feel I'm missing some power for the larger surface of a 9 footer. I do prefer about a 13mm but my league teammate breaks well with the second ball break using his snooker player! he spreads them too.

for me a smaller tip diameter would mean i have less surface contact with the cue ball... therefor i am losing out on control and possibly power due to the previous mentioned reasons. I use a 13mm and park the rock... when i was using a 12.75 or below I was always having the CB dance toomuch after the break. i have seen 13.25mm break shafts but they don't feel confortable in my hands. truth is... If you PRACTICE with something that you are confortable and CONFIDENT in, over time you will achieve good to great results. Just my lesson learned that i thought I would share. Hope this helps! ;)

Smaller tip means you will have to be more precise(or have a lot less control). That's why 13mm is standard. It's the easiest to use. I had a shaft that was nearly 14mm , and it was the easiest thing I have ever hit with. It was on a Joss sneaky pete,
and I'm pretty sure it was a custom shaft. I never had it measured, but it was slightly bigger than a new players shaft. I sold it.
Just to add. For me, how long the taper is matters. I prefer at least 12" of a parallel shaft to break. I have a long stroke(thank the pool gods for 314 2s.). But some people don't care. Does anyone disagree?
