breaking with your cue.

do you break with the cue you play with?
or do you use a break cue?

why? on both accounts.

I have a new dufferin I just got.
I've broke with it some and really like it.

but,I find myself pulling back a little worring I might be damaging my new
shaft.
then I tell myself I payed for this cue I might as well use it.

the tip going flat really dosent bother me
I can always retip/reshape.

I have gotten lots of differnent answers at local halls both ways.
some use a break cue, some do not.

I've been playing for years and have never broken a shaft on any of my cues.
but I've seen some really screwed up cues out there.

The only reason that I use a break cue is to keep my playing cue's tip from getting flat and to protect the ivory ferrule.

The only time I have ever seen a shaft shatter is on a house cue.

The ferrule can also be driven into the shaft on a cheap cue.

To me a Dufferin is not a cue to protect.
Why pay $300 for a break cue to protect a $100 cue????

Its all personal preference,

When i had my Schon i usta break with it.

I have seen guys break with a JossWest.

I use my Espiritu to break with.

Now some guys by a break cue, because they break so hard, and bend the shaft and all that stuff, so they dont damage thier playing cue.

I mean if you have nice cue that you dont want to damage then its one thing to get a seperate cue just for breaking. Look into a Action Sneaky Pete, or Jump Break.

If your cue is well constructed, it should not get damaged when you use it for breaking.

Whether your playing cue will be as effective as a breaking cue is another matter.

Some players play with a small tip but prefer to break with a big tip; some players like to use a hard tip for breaking and a soft tip for playing; some players think the break mushroom and harden their tips too much; some players afraid the break may crack the ivory joint, compress the silver ring works, or scratch the joint/forarm/ferrule when the cue is pressed on the table; some players play with a long taper but prefer a short taper for breaking; some players play with a heavy cue but prefer to break with a light cue and vice cersa...

In my opinion, if you can break well with your playing cue and your playing cue is well constructed, there is really no need to get another breaker.

Hope this helps.

Richard

The primary reasons for a separate break cue are the shape and hardness.
A break cue usually has a harder and flatter tip.
If you're concerned about hurting your cue, you've bought the wrong cue.

I used to use my playing cue to break and found that I wasn't gettting a lot of power of the break with it so I bought a break cue and have found that I get so much more power of the break than I ever did with my playing cue, btw my break cue is a stinger break/jump cue.

the break is a specific shot with specific requirements. you can liken it to a driver in golf. imo, it makes no sense to break with a playing cue, unless it's a matter of comfort,,,,and even then the playing cue will not get the same job done as a break cue will.

breaking

If you have been playing for years, and still use a dufferin, don't worry about it. But, if I had been playing for years, I would seriously think about upgrading my cue, preferably to a custom made cue, and not a manufactured by the 1,000's
model.

AMEN bruin70.... If the Pros feel they need a specific cue, to shoot certain shots with, who am I to contradict success. Earl, Johnny & Allison may be getting some coins to promote certain cues, but most of the professional line up aren't getting squat. They use jump cues, jump-break cues, break cue & playing cue to help them win money.

There's an old saying..."there's a tool for every job"

could you please enlighten me to this statement? what if the dufferin feels good to him?

i believe somewhere it was posted by mark tad himself that he used a graphite cue he bought from somewhere like wal-mart.......

or how about the people that have been playing for years that use joss and schon? guess they should switch to a custom cue........just because they've been playing for a while

I totally agree. I hate when people tell others that they need a certain type of cue. If you feel you need one or just want one, go for it. Otherwise if it aint broken dont try to fix it

I may be wrong but I believe the current World Champion shoots with a Schon/Predator combo. Imagine how much better he would be if he would just trash that crappy production cue.

I play with a Schon with a predator shaft that I also break with. I use to have a Predator sneaky pete that I broke with. I loved breaking with it. Then I sold it to a friend. I bought an Action jump/break cue and I dont like it. I dont mind using my playing cue to break with except when I play with my Scruggs. Too much $$$ and time to replace the shaft...

Thats my drawn out 2 cents...
