Bridge Hand Pinky Finger Injury!

Hello All,

I recently suffered an injury to the pinky finger of my bridge hand (left hand) via an accident using a miter saw. I was fortunate to not have cut the finger off so thankful for that. Anyway, the cut was to the inside edge of the finger from the tip along the finger nail and back about an inch. The finger has healed yet there is some slight deformity on the tip of the finger due to some skin loss. Any pressure on the tip of the finger is painful and the doctor has said this will take quite some time before it goes away. This presents a problem when trying to use a raised bridge with my hand since without the pinky finger on the table, the bridge is very unstable. So, I need something to put on that finger so that when I raise it up on the table, there will be no pressure on the tip of my finger yet still have the support. I had thought about the extensions Earl has used before (very little info on those here) or maybe a thimble but I'm thinking there would still be pressure applied to the tip of the finger. If any of you have ever had this problem and know a way around it, I would appreciate any and all suggestions.

Thanks in Advance,

Randy

Hmm.. I don't have much to say because I don't use my pinky as a support in any bridge.

My open hand is thumb pressed against middle knuckle of my index finger, index finger is down on the table, my middle finger is closed (if you make a fist, all four fingers are in the position my middle finger is in), my ring finger is down on the table, my pinky finger actually hangs out in the air. I find that putting my pinky down destabilizes my bridge hand and causes it to rock a little bit.

Closed hand it will depend on the shot, but in general my pinky is in the air as well.

Bridging over a ball, I use a tripod bridge (index and ring as front two legs, middle as back leg), and my pinky just hangs out.

Try letting your pinky just hang out in the air until you get the ability to put pressure on it again. You might find it to not be as important for a steady bridge as you might have originally. I certainly did.

Now, before you say anything, think about how cool this would be. A solid silver thimble.
Protecting your finger, and showing class at the same time. The chicks will be swarming you.

My bridge hand pinky had an accident 20 or so years ago and is now deformed and immobile. My extended bridge needs no pinky/cloth contact as I tripod with the other three fingers or a loop bridge. When I'm down on the shot I find that locking my wrist firms everything up just fine. Mitch

Search for Finger Splint or Finger Cot.

There's a million different types, including several available at most any pharmacy.

Seems like they would have sent you home with one if you received medical attention for the injury.

I had an accident and cut mine on the outside pretty bad .
I just wrapped it real tight when I was going to play with a bandage and some adhesive tape , kept dirt out and it was stiff enough that mine didn't hurt much , yours may be too painful for this.
I hope not.

Had a similar experience I cut 3/8" off the end of my bridge hand middle finger. I used mesh digital caps or variants for awhile you can google and find all different types available. Now I use Coban it's been three years and the Nerves flaring don't make me wanna piss myself. Try a medical supply near you or a dedicated pharmacy not a cvs or Walgreens usually they have more options. Best of luck and make sure to do the desensitizing therapy for the Nerves it helps a lot more than you may think.

Post it up

oH, THAT FIRST ONE... well ya gotta cut off the little brass bell before ya use it,
it's just too much of a ding-a-ling for most pinkies.

You can ask the doc to write a scrip for Occupational Therapy and find one that specializes in hand therapy. preferably a certified hand therapist. they have techniques/treatments that can really help with adhesions and scar tissue and accelerate alleviating that painful sensitivity with things like fluidotherapy and other sensory stimulation modalities for pain. Not only am I married to OT hand therapist I've also been a patient that required those very same treatments..

Thank you all for the excellent suggestions/ideas!! Even the funny ones! I knew I could count on this forum and it is greatly appreciated!! I am looking into the mesh digital caps but for now am using the splint provided by my doctor's office which is working okay.

Regards,

Randy
