You can't hit banks with an open bridge or draw the ball. Pretty much can't play the cue ball right.
Sure you can playing banks, straight backs when the CB is frozen to the rail you have to fire them a open bridge, even with the CB 2" off the rail you should use a open bridge. It happens all the time in banks, granted its a harder shot than when the CB is a foot off than and there is room for a closed bridge.
Watch the snooker players screw theball back with a open bridge, thats hard to do, but with good snooker form its possible every time for a solid player. In pool I can draw my rock to where I need it most of the time with a open bridge-if I am out of line and really need to suck the rock back I close the bridge.
It depends on the shot, more than anything. So there really aint a right or wrong answere. The better your stroke is the less it matters in general-there are exceptions to that too
