Bring your own balls

OK, I've been thinking about this for a few weeks now. And that would be to buy my own set of billiard balls and bring them to the pool hall to use when I want to practice or gamble.

I say this because in my town the thiers two places where i frequent and another i goto when need be.

Now the first place I have a weds 8ball league on and I think they might clean the balls once a week. And it seems to be the only place to get any reasonable action.

The other place I have a tuesday 8ball league and they have all Diamond tables but hand clean the balls, since they are too cheap to buy a ball washer. And on Tuesday the balls were so dirty and it was so hot in there, the balls would stick to gether when racking them.

So I figure i could just buy a set of Aramith or centennials and bring them in with me and clean them on my own. And save the hassel of wondering if the pool hall has cleaned thier billiard balls.

Has anyone done this before?

Yes, some times the equipment is so bad you have to take things into your own hands, just keep in mind you’ll look like a real tool.

Jimbo,

Well the pool hall that has the Diamond tables, I think Tuesday was the only time I've come in and gotten dirty balls. Today i was there and they were clean! So it might have just been a one time incident.

Now the other place where i shoot at on weds, thats a different story, I think if i came in with my own set, and the owner was there and she asked me about it, I would just tell her whats up, as I have before. And maybe she would get the hint who knows. But most likely she wouldnt.

But Its like i've tried to tell the owner, at said pool hall, all the other places i goto outside of this town, I get a clean set of balls when i come in, to use. So WTF!!!! lol

And as for looking like a tool, atleast i will be happy :D knowing I am playing with a clean set of billiard balls and everyone else has to use the dirty one!!!! WOOT!!!!

Every room I ever shot in my whole life I got to know the counterman or the owners and after 3 or 4 times in I felt comfortable asking for certain things, A certain table, clean balls, don't put smucks next to me if you can help it. Most places want to keep the players happy.

Jimbo,

Well maybe i should move to your place lol.

Ya know you'd think that would be the story at every place, but it isnt, in my area. One girl who works there most of the time, she wont do anything with cleaning the tables or the balls. And even the owner, she has become just like that.

She has two other girls who, when I have asked, have clean'd a set for me, but they only work like one/two days a week and one is league nite. And the other is like on a random saturday.

I even went so far as to tell them i was going across the way to another pool hall right down the road because of this, and they just looked at me like OK no big deal.

Now its funny because one pool hall i just started to go back to, I stopped going to because of the lack of competition and action, I can go into and get a set of balls cleaned right there! and be on my merry way.

I've always said, if I owned a pool hall i would make it manditory to have the tables cleaned every nite and the balls cleaned either before or after they are used.

Clean balls once a week?@#

I don't think my pool hall cleans their balls once a year, if that.

I've seen quite a few people bring their own ball sets with them. I like to brush off the table before league night starts, resulting in a dust storm of chalk and talc. I like to bring a fresh cube of chalk, and always bring a red dot.

If you think it improves the the quality of play, then show up with your own balls.

The only negative is that you have to worry about them while you are out. Centennials are not exactly cheap these days.

Yeah, I've got my own set. I first got them because the place I use to play at never washed the balls. And their cue balls were all different -- you never knew what you'd get in the set they gave you. There's another room I play at now, once in a while, where the balls are all old and pretty shrunk up and mismatched (most often the eight); and their cue balls are all chipped up. The regular room I play at now has several sets of nice balls that they keep aside for '"players" and they clean them regularly.

So, absolutely, get your own set and keep them in the tunk of your car. It makes a world of difference. But, as Jimbo said, you will look like a tool :-)

a different solution

If the problem is just that the balls are dirty, and not cracked, chipped, or shrunken, it would be easier and cheaper to carry a microfiber cloth and some solvent and clean the set you are going to play with. It only takes a few minutes, and you don't have to buy or carry a set of balls.

I'm benefited that the pool halls I frequent will generally use Centenials or Aramiths. But I have thought about buying the "Poker Pool" ball set and taking it there myself. Or have thought about taking a Billiard Golf board and mess around with that. I've also thought about taking my own Measle ball because I love that ball.

I generally don't care what people think of me so it wouldn't bother me if people thought I was arragont, a poser, or a pro.

Balls

I used to play 3 cushion (no tables near me now), and I left my special set of balls at the local pool room for a few of the better players. The owner came to me one day and said we need to work something out. When some of the players came to the counter and asked to " play with Jackson's balls" it was a bit embarrasing for the owners wife!!!

I bring my own cueball aramith (the one with the red dots) and I never had any comments or look...I'm not even the only one and we are talking about a pool hall that has around 45 tables

I just ask the pretty little bartender,

"Sparky, darlin', how much do I have to tip you to get my balls polished?"

Either way, I'm happy.

Well I bought a set of Aramith Premier's from a buddy of mine who owns a pool hall. He had a dozen or so sets he used for big tournaments. And had a couple that hadnt been used before. So he made me a good deal 60$ for the set.

I then went and bought some Turtle Wax and polished them up really nice, even though they didnt need it. This was all done saturday.

Well today i went to the pool hall and brought my set and gambled for a while with a guy on a 9ft and the balls played NICE!!!! expecially with the Pro Cup ball. And the rack would explode even on medium breaks.

And even on a table with semi-dead rails, they made the table play FAST!

But it was nice to be able to play with clean / polished pool balls.

Watch your balls when Lou is around!

Careful...This comes from a guy who has been known to, uh, borrow cue balls from Willie Mosconi. Where'd you get your complete set Lou - from Efren's last tournament?

Open Lou's closet and you might find a cascade of 1000 balls falling all around you. :)

I always have a set but I only need 3 and they fit in my case. Hardly any pool hall keeps the equip. clean. If you really want to get noticed clean the table too before playing. Clean table and clean balls is a whole different game.

Sang Lee's place they clean the table and balls after every session. That's what should happen. If pool halls did this their cloth would last at least twice as long. But then most don't know or probably don't care that the playing conditions are awful.

Hey. I borrowed exactly *one* -- count em -- *one* ball from Willie.

As to the closet full of balls... you must have me confused with someone else on this board who does have "several" balls that he's liberated from a wide variety of venues. But I ain't namin' names :-)
