Bring Your Own Pool Balls - BYOPB?

why even go to a place that has marginal equipment?
Oh thanks for the memories. 😉
On The Hill in Tacoma was a Vietnamese owned and operated bar ....and the owner would gamble. The table had character would be the kind assessment. Peaks of the gray slate were there. 🤷‍♂️ He had been scored upon a couple times when I got there so I couldn't get him up off of $10 a game 9 ball. So $120 was the night's pay. 🤷‍♂️ My Vietnamese sponsor wouldn't take a cut. 🤷‍♂️ He had been paying attention at the lessons. 😉

I feel at a pool hall I shouldn’t have to. The reason people are there is to play pool so the equipment should all be in good condition .

Now bar pool on the other hand I’ve seen plenty of teams bring their own balls. Hell I’ve seen bars keep a set of nice balls just for the leagues to use because honestly most bars around here don’t care about pool. It’s just something to keep the people occupied so they stay longer and buy more beer. The place we just played at this week I was glad we brought a cue ball because the one was some knock off that hand no wax on it left so between that and the terrible humid conditions you can stroke the piss out of it and maybe get it to draw back 3 or 4 diamonds lol
I didn't even know balls had wax on them.

In a perfect world/pool hall: the tables are all new Diamonds; the cloth is two-week old Simonis; the balls are new Centennials with a matched RC CB; there is a Delta ball rack; a new Moosehead bridge; and topless girls are racking for you every game and whispering sweet nothings into your ear every time you run out.

But perfection is hard to come by.

I have a set. Used to use them all the time before my halls refurb. Now I can choose dynasphere palladiums, Aramith blacc or Aramtih pro cup (or whatever they are called). So use them a lot less.
these days I use my set when I've been using a set for a while that has become dirty in the humid conditions, or if it's been a busy morning and I arrive late, because I know they will be clean, and it saves the hall staff time cleaning some to use.

if you like yours better bring them just like you bring your own cue or chalk.
but your opponent if not just playing for fun might not go for it.
we had this discussion before and lou and a couple others said why wouldnt an opponent want to play with nice clean balls.

the answer is that they are yours and you know more about them or something about them he may not know. and are use to them and feel confident playing with them. so its like spotting you.

similar to having a big money game and your opponent handed you a different but nicer stick than yours and said you have to play with this one.

Nah. It has to be a pair of Russo interlocking bridges.

I play in a pool hall that takes pretty good care of the equipment. Ernesto recently redid the tables including new bumpers on four of them. But the balls are 10-15 years old. All of them are small, maybe except for a few that are recent replacements.

For the small stakes I play for, I've never had an opponent object to using the nearly new, round balls that are all the same size, that I provide. In retrospect, some opponents may not have noticed that they are Aramith Tournament Pro-Cup balls, as opposed to Centennials, but I guess that's on them.

I’ve seen where a player is eager and anxious to gamble with you on an agreed upon amount and race games.
But then at the last minute of agreeing upon the match, they want to switch to a different table than the one you
have been playing on. They don’t want you to have an edge knowing the pockets for OB speed or CB rail speed.

I can understand why too. I’m a member at a pool hall where 1/2 the 9’ tables are std. Diamond pockets (4.5” CP).
The other 50% have 4.25” CP. The smaller pocket does require controlling object ball speed because without using
a friendly pocket speed, if you even brush the rail, you’ll see the OB do a cha cha dance between the pocket points.

Just get the topless girls racking, no one will complain about the equipment

I once was stuck pretty deep, well within my budget but only a couple of barrels left. My opponent was in dead punch and never missed. He had put enough pressure on me that I couldn't get settled. The tavern had two tables that were different makes and different cloth. So at down a hundred I proposed a switch of tables and jack the bet from 10 to 20 per game. In effect I was on my last barrel through doubling the bet. My offer was accepted and the change of tables did get a missed shot from him. It was just enough air for me to get settled and get my 100 back.
The funny part is that my opponent didn't even have the $10 we had started playing for. 🤷‍♂️ Once my money was back in my pocket we started using a coin to mark the score with promis to pay at 100. His mooching quarters to rack should have tipped me off. When the coin showed me up 100 he had to go to his car to get the money. .....He didn't even own a car. 🤷‍♂️ I did get a lesson that night. 😉
Edit: Almost forgot, once I was back to even we went back to the original table. I was settled at that point and it didn't help him.
Edit 2: He did get 7-8 and cash at the next Reno Sands 9 ball tournament, so he could shoot. 🤷‍♂️

lol that’s a little over the top. I don’t think cloth that’s regularly cleaned and balls that our cleaned and waxed weekly is to much to ask at a decent in pool hall but I guess in todays world where no one seems to have pride in what they do or own it is a lot to ask.
I didn't even know balls had wax on them.
Wax or polish .. whatever you want to call it try playing without it on lol I played at a bar once where when we got there for leagues and the balls had nothing on them because somebody decided to run them through the dishwasher 😂

It should be CLEANER, like Aramith ball cleaner, not “wax or polish”. Now I know places that use things such as this, a hall comes to mind that uses Meguiars wax which is meant to polish cars, another where I saw the woman the owner put behind the counter spraying Pledge furniture polish on the balls as they spun in the cleaner, it just makes me shake my head. When I asked at both places why they would do such a thing I got the same response, “look at how shiny they are”. A coat of wax meant for cars or furniture makes the balls play wonky. Balls should be cleaned as the manufacturers recommend, not waxed or polished. It’s like guys that use a half a container of baby powder when playing, it’s on the cloth, the rails, the balls, and it causes them to play in a matter they shouldn’t.

I use aramith cleaner now.. I used to use a sprey wax that you buy for cars. I play every day and put my balls in the polisher once a week and I can’t tell a difference in the balls look or play between the 2 so we can agree to disagree I guess. There has to be some kind of polish in aramith cleaner but I can’t seem to find the ingredients anywhere.
Pledge I’ve never heard of and wouldn’t use. It seems that would definitely change the way the balls play.

In my perfect world Gold Crown 2's and 3's would be wonderful, with new rails, and cloth changed when old cloth is showing wear. I think Diamond is HYPED BULLSH**, JMHO. Most of the World using Gold Crown in big events, Diamond is mostly USA.

If the Ball are Round, Rolled Right, and not Chipped great, want a special rack bring your own, want a special bridge head bring your own.

Owners of this Utopia should keep place clean, keep bathrooms clean, and if their are homeless in the area, get security to protect his property, investment, and customers.

Too many Pool Room & Pool Bar were run by HOBBY BUSINESS OWNERS want to be Owner, who did not know sh**, about much except it would be cool to own.

Well it was until the money ran out, they ran away customers, they reneged on guaranteed add money in tournament's, and pulled other BS that cause them to close.
