Broken Tenon

I had an accident with my Meucci black dot shaft. The ferrule and tenon snapped off somewhat cleanly. I would like to salvage the shaft. I figured I can either turn down the shaft to a specific diameter and length to form a new tenon or I can drill and glue a dowel pin in.

Any thoughts on which would be the way to go?

If I turn down to form a new tenon, what diameter and length should I go with?

If I drill and install a dowel, what material? I have a dowel pin from the hardware store and I also have a rod of G10 from McMaster
.

Thanks,
Pat

Use a 3/8 fluted maple dowel.
That way you can turn down the exposed part to 5/16.
G-10 would cause so much cue ball deflection, you'd go nuts after seeing what it does .

You just need about .800" exposed for a capped ferrule.
You can even turn down the 3/8 dowel pin to .350 if you want .

I have a solid rod of Juma ferrule material so the diameter can be just about any size. I got the G10 tenon idea from cue components.

Juma is pretty easy to work with .
Cut 1". Drill around .250" by .800" deep. Tap with spiral 5/16 18. Then follow with a bottoming tap.
Ream 5/16 by about 3/16 deep deep for the shoulder . You can use a 5/16 spot drill too if you don't have a reamer.
G10 can be used as break cue ferrule/tip combo.

I fix these kind of breaks for people all the time........... Put it in a lathe and turn the end flat. Drill it about 1 inch deep with a 1/4 then with a 5/16 drill.

Turn/make a 5/16 dowel from maple...I save old broken shafts just for this. make the dowel about 2 1/2 inches long.

Hand fit the dowel in the hole..... you may need to sand to final fit. Glue it in with 5 min epoxy. It helps to file a slight flat on the end of the dowel that goes in the hole to allow for glue relief.

When the glue is set, slip fit a ferrule on the dowel and glue it in place with 5 min epoxy. When the glue is set, face the ferrule and glue on a tip.

Turn the ferrule and tip to match the shaft.............

Never had one come back ...............
