Last night while a buddy and I were hitting balls around on my table, we were watching some old tape from the late 70's. There were some trick shots being done by some of the greats such as Ray Martin, a young Allen Hopkins, Pete Margo, etc., and a guy named Bruce Christopher. My buddy said he remembers Christopher creating quite a stir about himself at the time, pumping himself up as some great player/hustler, but then he was never really heard from professionally again. Anyone have any info on him? Just wondering if there are any good stories out there.

James Christopher ?

I first saw Bruce in 1976/7 at the tournaments in Asbury Park. For more info, do a search in http://groups.google.com for all of the words bruce christopher superstroke to see more, including his 1.5-million-dollar challenge.
James Christopher was a very good player from Texas who was active in the 1980s, as I recall, and totally unrelated.

I saw a picture of Bruce Christopher from Johnston City. But before that I just saw his ads asking anyone in the world to post $500,000 to play him. Why was that bet never challenged I wonder? Got any insights? He claims to be the richest pool player on earth and I am really surprised no one took him up on his challenge. He ran the ad for years in the 90's. I last saw his ad when he raised the challenge to $750,000 and was saying he would play anyone. I guess maybe he thought he would make good television money on it, or just wanted to show off, or maybe he believes he is that good. He was at Johnston City being presented as a top player of the time. So who knows, but I have oftened wondered.

I saw that ad too on BD magazine. He was living here in Buena Park, California when he was running that ad, I believe. Then one month he ran another ad claiming he sold out for $200K or so.
I think he was just high-rolling everyone. I doubt if he would have played Efren even on one-pocket if they took his challenge.
I don't know anyone who played for that kind of money. Maybe Archie Karas vs Tobey at HT one time.
