Brunstone or Slate?

I am looking at a used Gold Crown 3 that the owner bought new around 1980.
I have searched this forum on how to identify the slate to see if it is real slate, or brunstone and I am a little confused.
The slate looks Grey, not reddish, it is 1" thick, not 1 1/6" which would seem to be slate, but I have read that the corner pockets were cut sloped on the brunstone instead of straight down, and this table has the pocket sloped a little bit.

That would be slate. No brunstone on a three.

According to what I have read and from Brunswick themselves they used Brunstone on early 3's.

slate

If you look real close at the slate surface you will be able to tell...if you see machine marks from the milling process, it is slate....-look real close'if it has a sandstone purse looking surface with no machine marks it brunstone'
-another way to tell if the cloth is still on the table and you can't see the top side, look on the under side of slate to see if its concave "low in the center" swayback'

Maybe if I knew what I was doing but with the info I have I cant tell :) I dont know what a sandstone "purse" would look like or what kind of machine marks there would be. It is an hour away so I cant look at it easily but I remember the top being very smooth and it had marks on it, just not sure what kind of marks.

Is there such thing as 1" thick Brunstone? According to everything I have read the brunestone is thicker?

Here are a few pictures but im not sure if you cant tell much from them.

Thanks for the replies :)

I dont know anything about the frame, I wouldn't think the guy painted it himself and he bought it new in 1980 or so, he doesnt know about tables to paint it so I wonder if it came from the factory that way? He hasnt even had the rubber changed in 30 years either which shows what he knows about them. I know it has the gold crown 3 decal on it.

What about the slight slope in the corner pocket? I thought that was only on the brunstone?

There's no slop in them pocket cuts, trust me, it's slate.

You mean slope right? Yes there is a slight slope in the cuts as I have seen it. The cut for the pocket it not square with the top surface of the slate, it slopes in. Not a whole lot but I dont know what it looks like on brunstone.

But not about a 1/2" or so....right? 1" backing was also used on the Brunstone, the table in the pictures is using 3/4" backing;)

OK, cool. No its not 1/2" but I didnt know how much slope the brunstone had.

Thanks again.

You're alos going to find out that the pocket castings don't mount as seen in the diagram you posted, as that hardware is the left over GC2 hardware. This table uses the threaded inserts at the ends of the rails to mount the pocket castings.
