My friends parents want to buy a pool table for their son and asked me for information so I am posting this here. They have a budget of approx. $1500 and are looking for a new table for him. There seesm to be only a few choices in our area: a Brunswick Black Wolf or a AMF playmaster. I was wondering which would really please a good recreational player. I suggested buying a used Brunswick for $2k and having it recovered but they were really against the idea of a used table. The AMF looked pretty nice to me. Thanks for the replys in advance!

There are several models in the Playmaster line so you would need to be more specific.

I believe it is a AMF Savannah made in MO. It is the contemporary styled table similar to a Black Wolf. The AMF has 7/8" slate. I just have not found any information about the AMF tables anywhere. Both would be 8 foot tables.

AMF tables are an ok furniture style table. The company went under a couple years ago, and I can't recall if anyone bought them out or not. They have a couple issues like the way the blinds attached up until a few years ago, the screws can very easily strip out. They actually got screwed into a channel in the bottom of the slate instead of onto the back of the rail. They finally changed the design a few years ago, but it depends on how old the table is.

I've also seen a lot of AMF's with the poplar backing warped and separated from the slate.

Other than that though, decent tables.

IMO the Bwick has a more professional look. is available with full 1" slate and has a lifetime warranty.
Don't know if one can be had for $1500 but if it was my son I'd let him pick what he wanted.
