Bryce Avila?

A few years ago I played Bryce in the quarterfinals of a big regional tournament in my neck of the woods. It was a USPPA event, and at the time he was the highest rated player, he was like 168 or something like that. When I saw the sheet, I was like OH CRAP!!! Anyways, he had to spot me 4 games to 8, and he won the first 4 games after I missed the first shot, by running a 2 pack, then I missed another shot, he ran out, and then broke and ran another rack. After that it was tied at 4-4, and I seemed to catch a gear out of nowhere, and I started running out alot. I ended up winning the next 4 games, and in the very last game, I broke and ran down to a 6-9 combo. The 9ball was hanging in the jaws and I had a tough cut to it on the 6. When I sank the combo, he politely shook my hand and said "good shooting". I found that very strange, because before I played him, people told me to watch out for his antics, etc. I guess he had changed his ways by then. He was totally cool about it, even though he came down all the way from up north and lost in the quarterfinals.

I like his game alot. He uses a very short and compact bridge, and rock solid fundamentals. No bad habits, he just pockets balls with ease and doesn't get angry if he makes mistakes. I hope he is still playing pool, he could be a top top player if he keeps on playing.

I know what you mean levartze he is a completely different person when he is drunk. Definately out of control. I was outside with him when he threw those balls and he was completely hammered. I mean believe me coming from someone who was around him for years and went around with him everywhere it was like Dr. Jeckyl and Mr. Hyde. He could be the coolest person and then the meanest drunk. But when it came to his game he was very respectful and didn't act like a jerk or anything like that if he lost. And he did have just a simple and perfect stroke. He just made it look so easy. Anyways wish I could see him playing in stroke again. Fun to watch. :)

I watched it at Chet's place! It was a great match.

Alcohol and Bryce don't mix well. He got kicked out of CB's for throwing billiard balls at cars (that's definitely NOT kewl), he is banned (for life) from the Sands in Reno, he got beat up pretty bad in Sacto (I understand a lot of teeth were knocked out),...etc. Still, he's a class act when he isn't under the influence.

California Billiards Club is a great place, have to love a pool hall that serves steamed rice with spam or hotdogs. Great room, I love the way they seperate the tables and that they host decent tournaments in line with the Reno event.

By the way, he got his teeth knocked out a couple of times, if my memory serves me right it was by the same Samoan bouncer. Either way I believe anyone would agree that Bryce is a talented person that got distracted and never realized his full potential in pool.

When he got hit by the samoan guy it was in Sac and it only happened once. Just a bad situation. Bryce did have so much potential it was ridiculous. Like I said the guy was just majorly talented.

Fearless, Ron Cook here!
Bryce is a very stong player, could be a great player and can certainly play with the best when he is on his game. He is also a great money player
and fights hard to win. He could certainly beat any given player when he is
is playing his best game. I too have not seen him for over a year. I would think he is still in the Bay Area but I may be wrong. I believe with only a few adjustments to his game he could beat the best, for he has a lot of heart.

I have played him for money a couple of times and it has always been
a challenge to beat him. I love to watch him play pool and he certainly has a future if he continues to play.

Speaking of someone who can play! Ron Cook! Where have you been? Not seen you in a while!

John
