I am thinking of a future custom and discovered this wood. It is called Buckeye Burl and is gorgeous. I am wondering if any makers out there have ever used this wood in cues and if so did it work well. I have yet to see a cue with this wood.

I'm just the opposite. I believe it is a very unique and stunning wood. I really like it but I would be afraid to use it as a structural component in a cue, even if cored, as I imagine it is a really soft wood being a burl so would dent easily. It of coarse could be stabilized but then it would have more of a plastic type hit. The use of it certainly wouldn't go well in a traditional cue but in a more modern, merry widow type cue that depends on the woods figure and coloring that makes it stand out instead of points, veneers and inlays. As usual, just my .02 cents worth.

I have a Kilby cue that had buckeye burl in the butt sleeve, really sets the cue off. Don't think I would use in the forearm either, impregnated or not except for points.

buckeye burl

i have made a few buckeye cues and i am very happy with the results.
THE BAD , buckeye should be stabilized and cored. the wood is so soft i can cut into it with my fingernail.

to get better quality wood, i found, is just to buy a slab that was cut for a table top. there is a lot of waste, and a lot of work, but in the end you get better wood.

you will have to cut it oversize, because a lot of it will warp in the stabilizing process

when i use buckeye i core the forearm, handle and butt cap with one solid piece of laminated maple.

THE GOOD it looks fantastic.

PFD Buckeye burl

I'm having a cue made by Paul at PFD Studios and it will be cored for stability. I decided to have six points of ebony framed in ivory included in my cue. The points will be also be included in the butt. I believe Paul impregnates his Buckeye burl with resin to help add structural integrity. A few months ago a PFD buckeye burl sold and it was a real show stopper IMO....
