Buddy Hall still can play

My First Post

I was there in 85 and witnessed most games, with other than my mind on the GAMES. I let Keith play this Mexican, that most had only heard of for lots of cash, only to find out in mid-set the guy[Cesar M] was Efren. I told not even Keith, who missed a hard 4-9 combo to win the set-then we lost. I still told only my closest FRIENDS. He won the tournament, betting line -2 games, Cesar. He then played others and finally Buddy. Buddy won, play some tomorrow, Buddy shows, no opponent. By the way Calcutta, Buddy 1400-1500,Cesar, paired with the best Mexican in San Anton.100 Joe B.

I hear what you're saying, Joe B. One thing though, Cesar(Efren) went for $100 becuase at the time, who the hell was "Cesar Morales"?! ;)

How can you knock Buddy. He has to have one of the best cueballs in the business and deosn't have to lose to anyone (in his prime). I was just putting a different viewpoint out there.

great stories OHB. write a book or make a movie. now about buddy, so many people base their opinion on having seen players of the last few years play on tv and in tournements. lots of very good players out there, but unless you actually saw buddy play when he was in shreveport you just will never know how unbeatable he really was.$bill can testify as to what buddy was capable of. you are so right when you said watching him play was boring. we had a saying about how buddy played....he never gets out of line and he never gets on the rail. keep the old stories coming.

I have to laugh when people say Efren is the greatest
cueist of all time. I mean no disrespect to Efren, I think he's an amazing player and probably the best all-around pool player right now. However, 50 years from now when people look at the record books they'll see Earl's 6 world Championships and 5 U.S. Opens, Mike Sigel and Steve Mizerak's numerous titles, and they'll see Efren's name but not nearly as often as the others. To say he was better than Mosconi is ridiculous, he won 15 World Titles! He dominated he game for almpst his entire career, Reyes hasn't dominated anything.

Hate to disagree with you Bobby, but Efren is the greatest pool player ever. Comparing pool to snooker to three cushion is pointless, so let's stick with pool.

Efren is arguably the best eight ball player ever, and some even believe he's the greatest one pocket player ever. He's certainly one of the best ever in rotation, and is among the best five ever in nine ball. And even though his straight pool may not be quite up to snuff, he twice came in the top 3 of the US Open 14.1 championships.

Mosconi may have dominated straight pool for many years, and a good case can be made that Earl, Buddy, and Johnny had slightly better careers if one restricts the analysis to nine ball. Nobody, however, has ever shown the all-around excellence of Reyes across all the games played over the glorious green felt.

I'm guessing that fifty years from now, those of us lucky enough (I'm not counting on it, but if I'm around, all on the forum are invited to my 97th birthday party) to be alive will tell stories of how they watched Efren Reyes, the greatest pool player that ever lived.

I have to agree here. Efren is probably the best all around pool player to ever pick up a cue.....If you don't believe us....Just ask any PRO. Most all of them agree that when it comes to all of the games, Efren is the best ever.

Efren is introduced in Europe as "probably the greatest who ever held a cue." Do/did they do this for anyone else? I was also watching an old accu-stats video and he was playing one-pocket and the commentators said that he revolutionized nine-ball by introducing the kick-safety, that Americans only used to kick to hit the ball until he came - how true is this?

hey i though that was jersey red?

Buddy tortured Efren at Reds

:p I was there and won a whole lot of money betting on Buddy in a 8 ahead
set of even 9 ball which Buddy won in less than an hour and 1/2. The Philipinos were laying me 3 to 2 in the money so I unloaded. Buddy made it look easy, taking nothing away from Efren who is definetly a super great player.

this is one of the things i like about pool compared to other sports. one can still remain very competitive though at 50's or even 60's. in tennis, i was a bit disheartened to see my fave players retire at early or mid 30's. in pool i can enjoy seeing my favorites play loooooooooonger. buddy's case is really inspirational. i hope the same will be true with me when if i'll reach that age -that i'll still be good in it. but hey i am yet to learn pool! LOL!

But look at Efren's consistency ever since he came to the united states. You are talking about a 4 year span of perfect 9-ball, Efren has a span of decades with high finishes in 95% of the tournaments he plays in, if he doesn't snap them off.

Every great pool player has had their heyday. There was a period of time when Mike Sigel was winning everything, then there was Nick Varner, Buddy Hall, you name it. Look what's happening to Kid Delicious.

Efren's never had a prime, he has continued to play great with consistency for decades.

Buddy Hall can still play, absoloutely, look at his high finishes in these tournaments recently. Every top player out there has had a period when he was nearly unbeatable, except for Efren. Efren is the only player, quite possibly in the world, who can beat 95% of the top players in the world when he is struggling. He's got the moves, and I'm sure Buddy does too. But Efren's performance at DCC shows what he's made of, even in his older age, he is still the world's greatest pool player to ever grace the planet. I'll take Efren over any of the all time greats as the favorite, no doubt in my mind. When I hear people who have been around pool for 30-40 years, they speak of Efren in the same fashion- nobody can accomplish what he has accomplished, and continued to accomplish.

Buddy hall in a similar fashion, yet a 4 year period of dead punch doesn't compare much to a man who for the past few decades is often capable of shooting a 1000.

I've hear stories of Buddy and Efren matching up, something along the lines up Efren saying "Buddy you never meeeess" or something like that, and shortly thereafter, Buddy became a witness to the greatness of Efren.

Pool is the type of the game where you can lose without participating in a match. Just because Buddy kept people in their chairs the entire set, doesn't mean that it hasn't happened to him. What Efren is known for is, hence the name the "magician" is coming with unbelievable shots, sometimes not even for the run out, but for mere control of the table.

There is no human being on this planet who can beat Efren on a consistent basis. The man's a genius at the table. Of course Buddy is too, but I think Efren is a better player than Buddy, even when Buddy was in his prime, IMHO. By the way, I'm a young guy who wasn't around to see Buddy in his prime, but I've heard multiple accounts, from guys who have been around pool for nearly half a century. They all painted a pretty clear picture- Efren would have beaten Mosconi at any game, even if it were 14.1, had Efren dedicated time to practic and learn the game. He's the most talented cueist on the planet, IMHO.

All I have to say about this is I was standing next to Buddy and Efren trying to match up playing 10 ball 2 shot foul and Efren said no thank you! That speaks volumes about how good Buddy Hall played in the 80's.
