Building wrap area with veneer

When you are trying to build the area under the wrap with a wooden veneer (as you would a leather wrap) how are you doing the initial back slide glue up to hold the veneer so you can cut the seam?

Super glue? Wood glue? 5 minute epoxy?

I have done it many times but I didn't use veneer. I used cotton string like a kite string. I would do a few layers till it was about right and coat it with some epoxy or spray finish. Sand it smooth and do the linen wrap. Comes out perfect and it is pretty much fool proof, actually very easy.

I don't use veneer either I just coated with 5 minute epoxy and keep building it up ...the only drawback is it takes awhile to cure all the epoxy....I have to try the string idea sounds good.

I have done a few like that with cotton string and coated with finish as a final wrap. It soaks up the finish and when you are done it is the same as a cue with no wrap.

Because the cotton presses so smooth you can't feel where the wrap is at all. If done in say black it really looks great. You can not see the wrap segments, it looks like something solid.

I have had people stare at it and ask if it was leather under the finish. It's funny the goofy stuff you come up with that actually works.

you can build a wrap channel with ca epoxy veneer tape bondo even multiple wraps like the cotton string idea but personally i find bondo to be the fastest most easy and best way only down side is the smell when appling.......:)

I thought of all those ideas, and all of them will work, but there were two main factors in my thinking. 1, I'm lazy and didn't want to look up densities for all my options to see what would be closest to a thicker wood handle. 2, concentricity. I didn't want to fight with smoothing the bumps, recutting the wrap groove after indicating the butt perfectly, etc.

I feel like overall the veneer method is the least work with the best results. That's my opinion and worth every penny you paid for it.

This video shows another method but it doesn't look particularly simple.

In the video, he admits that putting the veneer on like he does in the video is a pita! And that putting on two strips length wise, gives the same result, but it's much easier to do.
You could also use several strips and glue them on side by side.
