burnish a new shaft

Leather or a piece of brown cardboard (no ink) works great to burnish your shaft. You'll need to do it often with new wood. I like to use a wax as well to help seal it & protect it from moisture & chalk dust. The more you burnish it & wax it, then the more it will stay that way & the less you'll have to mess with it. :wink:
 
I like Butchers Bowling Alley Wax. Search Butchers in the main section & there is a thread discussing it. Many tried it after I recommended it & were quite pleased.
 
I used Butchers Wax after Kevin's recommendation and love it.

I've also let some of my cue repair guy's try it and they use nothing else now.

Lightly sand with 1000 grit and then rub it with a leather pad.
All you want to do here is smooth out the rough burrs of the wood grain.
Do not try to sand out any dents.
As recommended in other replies, use some wax and burnish it again.
 
Used a 2000 grit paper and lightly sand, then I use a sealer and then use a good coat of California Mothers Gold carnuba wax. I apply 2 coats ona new shaft and it is smooth as silk and lasts.
