Is this going to be more convenient than me spitting on a note for burnishing? Just shove it in and twist?

Just curious. Presently have access to a lathe, but won’t always.

I accidentally burnished my tip so shiny by just completing strokes on the top edge of a lazy boy chair that when I had my shaft brought down, the cue guy said he can burnish the sides on the lathe no problem but he won't get it buffed to that level. So there is that as an option. As far as the tool goes, it doesn't surprise me at all that ppl have reported tips coming off.
 
Spit and leather. When smoking wasn’t a felony and free matchbooks were everywhere the paper on those worked great. Then you could violate more warnings and light a cigarette with a match from a matchbook without a cover. Some people now would have an aneurysm watching what we did in my youth.
 
I have and love one of these little guys. Not even sure when or where I got it but it’s great. Very small, easy to control and get it just on the tip and you can easily modulate pressure so it gets well burnished but won’t twist your tip off. Surprisingly useful little strip of leather

I have a similar device, opaque though, with knurled sides (very helpful), that I needed frequently (no break cue) back when I used LePro tips. The pre-compressed milk duds I install now never spread, and since my tipping tool trims off any excess, the burnishing device just gathers dust.

I tried the wild Asian goat foreskin method. It worked. Maybe too good. My soft tip plays super hard now.

I have always used the hundred dollar bill method myself, preferably a brand new one. You will get some green on the side of your tip but I have always thought it puts the tip in the right frame of mind. We are after the cash, the bigger the better!

Just be careful, I stupidly tried to use one on a "lathe" and it heated the tip up and popped it off. A empty paper towel tube works well.

It cost pennies here, so I got one. I burnished a little first using one of the new GBP notes and some spit. Then pushed this down on it while gently swivelling to get a bit of a 'cone' to the tip. Remove the top end to release the air/vacuum and it slides right off, no drama with tip popping off.
Definitely more effort than just asking at the hall for my mate to do it.

I used a 50gbp note that I won of a guy who visited for China Open.
Novelty to it being I had never seen a new one before, and the old ones I never wanted because it was impossible to spend the old ones without a store rubbing them on paper, UV lighting them and telling you they were fake half the time lol
Probably seen about 3 or 4 50 notes in my life, so it makes me laugh using it to burnish a tip in a country where I can't spend the thing 🤣
 
Just go up with a wet thumb on the outside of the tip. Then close a paper towel or napkin around it and turn in one direction with some pressure. That's all you have to do. There's no need for a tool to do it, and I've heard more than once that it can take the tip off. Simpler is usually better.
 
I always used the matchbook cover from a plain old pack of matches. Open it up and use the inside of the matchbook cover. Moisten the sides of the tip and go at it. I liked firm paper (matchbook cover or ?). Dollar bill fair, soft leather ok, business card or 3x5 index card, not bad, matchbook cover Check! Try it, you'll like it. Oh, one more. The paper side of a piece of sandpaper was good also.

Always had that plus a tip tapper (or similar small tool) and a piece of scotchbrite. All small stuff I could carry in my pocket and use so no one noticed. Came in very handy when playing in bars using a house cue. I could make any straight cue play good! For some reason I liked to play with a light cue (15 or 16 oz.) in a bar. Never knew exactly why that worked for me.

I think the lighter ones play more like a 2 piece with a pro taper. They are conical so that's weird to begin with, at least you aren't adding 5 more ounces to the calculation. I think the heavier ones are easier to get astray with.

I think,
lube
gentle twisting
and trim down that 3/8 tall tip
and it should work fine.

Amazon wants 17, 18 hundred pence for 'em. They also have a fork for under 5 bucks. No brainer.
