I'm a mid rank apa league player and honestly not to bash leagues but this session being my first and seeing what it's about is really killing my love of the game.

What are some other games pool has to offer without getting on a snooker table? If possible please provide a link to the rules of the game you list but video tutorials are gold

There is more to 8 and 9 ball than league play. Tournaments, or even a non-APA league, or just play it with friends.

10 ball is great, you can play it with the same rules as 9 ball but using 10 balls, adds a bit of a challenge.

You can find some info on different games here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cue_sports towards the bottom listed under List of cue sports

Depends on what's frustrating you about 8- and 9- ball.

For me it's not calling the pockets. If we're going to play smash-ball, I'd rather stay home. Calling the pockets makes it an entirely different game. Even though 10-ball only adds one more ball, it seems like it makes the game 50% more difficult.

If 8- and 9-ball are boring because you feel they're too easy, try one-pocket. It's an entirely different game where strategy is #1 and shot-making is #2. http://www.onepocket.org/getting_started.htm

APA may be the biggest league in the US, but it's not representative of all leagues. Does your local pool hall offer any in-house leagues? Another option to look into are local tournaments.

I play in an in-house team 8-ball and 14.1 league. We play using BCA rules, not APA scoring/handicaps.

@ Kim I'm not complaining about the game, I'm just looking for alternatives to take a break, when the high ranks on your team get mad at you for not seeing a run out right after the break, or they laugh at you for not being able to beat the 9 ball ghost 3 times consecutively and consistently, it kinda frustrates you and so instead of getting mad I'm just looking into new things.

Where is the best place to find the regular rules for one pocket, I've only seen it played for money and it looked confusing .

And my local pool halls currently have no other in house leagues.

If your teammates are getting mad or laughing at you, it's time to find new teammates.

Another option is 14.1. It's a great game for competing or practicing. Watch some youtube videos or check out member videos in the 14.1 subforum.

Here are the rules:

Sounds like you need a different team. If what you say is true then I don't really see the need to continue on with that team.

The problems not with just my teams, it's with 70% of the people I ask in league on how to improve my game

I hesitate to ask this as it may come across wrong but have you considered that you may be taking some people wrong when they critique your game?

If what you say is true about them laughing at you then find another team or league. If you are taking them wrong keep an open mind.

This is a clear (CLEAR) indication that the problem is not APA, or league, but the people at the local establistment where APA league is played.

Find a different local establistment.

bdorman...The real difference between 9ball and 10ball is no slop. You have to call the pocket for all balls in 10ball...and you can't win on the break! :D

World Standardized Rules

A lot of the techniques and standard shots/banks/safeties need to be seen and practiced but the rules are a good starting point. If I said, "just play the three-railer" it's one of those shots you have to know to even spot. Scott Frost has a good video on some of this, Fast Lenny (on AZ) sells it.

Your team expects a lot if they demand a 3-pack from a mid-level player. They don't sound like the friendliest of people.

When I play 9-ball with friends, we play it call-pocket. Yeah, I know 9-ball is supposed to be a slop game...but it's more fun when it's call-pocket. It's not a league; just friends trading dimes.

One Pocket is a great thinking and banking game.

.

One Pocket is the game to go to when you can't stand to play 8 Ball & 9 Ball anymore. It's a slower game and requires a lot of thinking on tactics and strategies.

Every pool hall has a few regulars who play. Simply spend some time watching the game to get a feel for how it is played, then put up your challenge. It teaches respect for defense and patience.

I've seen games that take a couple hundred innings, and also games over in 15 minutes (usually because the loser made a very bad tactical error).
