Butt lengths....

Hi everyone,

Can someone please comment on why certain cues have a very small butt while others that have inlays seem to be longer.

Does it have something to do with the balance point?

Just wondering because I am looking for my next cue and seem to like the look and a longer butt where the wrap starts higher.

Thanks in advance

A longer butt sleeve leaves more room for the cuemaker to do his art. Some cuemakers like a longer sleeve & some don't. It doesn't effect the balance or playability...JER

Some players want to have their hand come back further down the cue and still feel the wrap, while most leave the butt sleeve a few inchs long for looks.
Here is an example of one I made to allow a longer grip area and shorter butt sleeve:

Here is an example of the normal way I do them:

The butts are actually the same standard 29" length, but the photos are not the same size.

butt lengths...

Thank you for the responses. And thank you for being so generous. I can not tell you how much I enjoy reading this site learning about pool and cue making right from the source.

Thank You
Phil

The length of the butt-section has nothing to do with balance-point.
It's an area where the builder is allowed to express themselves.
A 5"+ butt-section coupled with a 12"+ forearm will give the visual illusion of a longer, more slender cue.
With deco-rings at the 'C' & 'D' locations, the actual wrap can be reduced to 11-11.5" thus altering the visual perception of the cue's length.
Hopefully your question was answered to your satisfaction. My input was designed to offer some reasoning as to WHY there are differing butt-section lengths.
Chris offered one of the more practical reasons.
