butt wrap? thick and slippery

Looking for something a bit different in a butt wrap. This is a skinny wrapless butt. Plain Bubinga so none too attractive now. I don't want to put something on that looks out and out silly like pink tights but looks aren't of primary importance.

What I would like is something 0.05" to 0.10" thick to increase total diameter of the butt 0.10" to 0.20" or thereabouts, nothing written in stone about the diameter.

The other thing is that I like to play around with a slipstroke sometimes so I would like something more slippery than a typical wrapless handle. Linen would work but be thinner than preferred plus I want a longer than usual wrap area extending a little further towards the joint and almost to the buttcap which this butt doesn't have at the moment anyway. I can add a buttcap to suit me or just leave one off. This is just a player that will never be a collector cue!

So, any thoughts for a wrap material? Multiple layers aren't out of the question but would of course add headaches. This is just for my personal bang around cue so if it works but doesn't last long I can always take it off and add maybe a collar to protect the wrap on bottom and a buttcap. The cue is too thin now so I don't want to cut the wrap area down thinner.

One thing I have considered is some of the superthread type fishing string. Never had thread thicker than linen wrap on a cue so I don't know if larger diameter string would slide easier or less than standard linen when held loosely. Cork would handle thickness but I assume would be too grabby for what I want.

Thinking I want something fairly hard to go with slippery then maybe a good slippery wax on top but these are just random thoughts. Open to ideas. I am asking before doing any digging at a big box store like Home Depot or Bass Pro due to putting a gimp in my giddy-up recently, walking is limited at the moment.

Thoughts?

Hobby cuemaker here. I have installed several wraps using super braid fishing line. The grip is more slippery than linen. 160 pound test is listed as .033 inch diameter.
I have considered using micro paracord, .046".
The wrap could possibly be put on the cue with no wrap groove to increase the diameter.

Here is some more examples of different braid fishing line, some of which have versions with a slippery coating, and also examples of braided serving material for archery.
For example, Power pro makes a slick version also.

2. PowerPro Super8Slick V2
  • Description: An upgraded 8-strand braided line with a smooth coating for enhanced casting performance.
  • Features: Very smooth and slick, casts well, quieter through guides compared to the original PowerPro.
  • Applications: Ideal for anglers seeking improved casting distance and a quieter line, especially for freshwater fishing.

Those dia for power pro only show to 60#, but they have thicker line also, like 80#,100#, and on up, chart only showed up to 60#. The super slick version may top out at some point though.
Also the BCY serving stuff is pretty slick and durable also.

Thanks for the suggestions so far.

I think I would need a thicker string for my purposes. The thicker fishing line might be just the ticket but I see some of it listed as stretchy. I don't remember the braided stuff from long ago being stretchy so I am going to assume still not stretchy for my purposes. I could wrap it on a medium sized salt water reel and crank the drag down to wrap the thread tightly originally.

My man that cleaned all the reels I used every week went ballistic over the original iron threads and such. People destroyed so many reels because of the lack of stretch he threatened to quit working on them. I brought a few of my bait casters in with some of the super line on them. He was all set to raise hell until I told him to check the drags. "Most people don't have sense enough to do that." I kept my drags around six or eight pounds. An educated thumb handled the rest of the drag, no load on the reel. Things could get warm with big redfish on the other end of the line. "Big" being three or four feet in the marsh. They got much bigger offshore. The marsh reds strike and fight like bigmouth bass so they are entertaining to catch!

I read about the serving material. I haven't handled any in many years and it was already wrapped on longbow string so I have no idea. I suspect they have some at the bass pro about twenty-five miles up the road though. They will also almost certainly have the heavy braided fishing line too. Have to do some high level cyphering to try to figure out how long a piece I need, last I knew they loaded reels and sold the string by the yard. I noticed string wax too. Might be just the ticket for a wrap that I want to be slick.

I have a piece of ivorine four that would probably make the bottom collar to avoid cutting down the cue stick, A buttcap blank might have to be ordered or I can grab a piece of wood.

This project is getting interesting. Now if I just didn't have all my lathes in storage!(grin) Got to get the cue lathe out of my brother's way in his shop anyway, might be a good excuse to get off my rear!

I was also daydreaming about something I could make a one piece wrap out of. One of my many hats over the years was as a sheet metal mechanic so I can make a pattern to cut a wrap from a sheet of something appropriate.

Either way, this project is starting to look feasible and my slip stroke is in need of some tuning.

Thanks again to everyone! Been years since I snuck back here to the cue forums but as always a great bunch of guys!

Decided to repost the BCY serving as the screen capture wasn't sharp enough to read. Just click it.

Braid won't stretch.

That is what I remembered but from long ago. It was easy to get solid hook sets at distances mono didn't want to give a good hook up.

You got me pointed in the right direction and I had looked it up. Do appreciate the repost! I had no clue what serving was. I had owned bowstrings with serving on them but it has been decades since I messed with bows. While looking up serving I found string and serving waxes too which might come in handy when I am wanting a slippery surface. Never know where paths might lead!

I'll take a look at this too. I'm not in a rush, just a rainy day project. I would like the perfect cue for a slipstroke. Of course perfect is hard to come by!

String and serving waxes actually will make it sticky. For servings, it helps keep it from sliding on the string. for strings, it protects the strands from fraying as they rub against each other. Yes it's a wax, but a real tacky wax, if you were to use it on a cue serving, your hand would stick like glue.
