Buttsleeve/Buttcap Refinish Thickness

I have an cue with a cracked buttcap. I was able to obtain an original replacement buttcap with identical logo. The cue was due for a refinish anyways since it was showing its age.

The only issue is that the new buttcap is about .7mm (.027”) to .8mm (.031”) thicker than the buttsleeve.

My question is: I don’t want the new butt-cap reduced at all since I’d like the logo to remain intact and as untouched as possible. Is this .027”-.031” discrepancy in thickness something that could be solved by having a thicker finish on the butt-sleeve? Or would an additional finish of this thickness be too much?

What’s the max coat thickness you guys would add in cases like this to make sure all the seams are flush, after a cue is refinished with replacement parts like this?

Here is the problem with that. When the cues are made the butt cap is sanded with the butt sleeve and then the logo is engraved after the fact so everything matches up. You are better off sanding the new butt cap down to the original size and then finish. Very hard to build finish up more than .010 or at least I would not as it is too prone to chip and pull away.

Try to find a butt cap closer to size.

That is a lot of finish but can be done with a few coats of one of the slow drying epoxy finishes.

Thanks for your quick responses guys.

The buttcap should be arriving in the mail sometime this week. I got in touch with 'poolcrazy' and he found the closest match he could find, straight out of Hueblers stock. (PS: many thanks to pool crazy for helping me out). Perhaps the logos are cut deeper on these replacement buttcaps.

I'll take measurements with my own calipers once it arrives. It may yet turn out to be a closer match than predicted. Though...it may yet still be worse, and it will have to get turned down regardless.

If that is the case, I presume that it is not at all impossible to have the logo 're-etched' with a CNC?
(I'll be sending the cue to Jacoby Custom Cues for the repairs, and I know that they offer custom logo engraving).

Would you have any thoughts on custom engraving as an alternative? (I realize that such a task would entail a precise recreation of the logo. I work as a digital media specialist, and recreating logos with exact vector measurements is something I have experience doing)
