Buy a shaft or buy a cue?

Need a little advice here. Just recently bought a table for the first time, which gives me much more time to play and practice. I've also got about 20 low priced cues, which shoot well, but I do not have an LD shaft. I bought a Universal smart shaft some time ago off ebay, but I really can't tell any difference as far as squirt goes on my playing cue. I want to improve, but I think I've gotten as far as possible with upgrading either a cue or shaft. Any suggestions would be welcome.

I believe Universal smart shaft is a "hybrid" shaft (I might be wrong), I have never played with it so I don't know how it compares to LD shafts. But, if you don't like that you are getting something "extra" out of it then try the LD shaft. It's all about the feel.
It also depends on your budget, if you got enough money to buy a cue + LD shaft, go for it.
If not, then I'll just settle with a LD shaft. There are a lot of production cues that come with already paired LD shafts (like ob or predator cues).

cues

Not a LD fan ,
I would try a better production cue or custom.
everyone is different,
One option is to buy the right hi end custom cue, Use one shaft leave the other shaft as new,
take good care of the cue, and 30 years later sale it for a mint .

Bottom line is you get paid for using a nice cue.
But God forbid that anyone would listen to such rubbish.

Agree with Mike, just get a nice cue that you like and stick with it. Whether the shafts are normal or LD or whatever, it doesn't matter once you get used to playing with it.
LD shafts have some advantages and make some shots easier (debatable) and take some getting used to. But, if you do plan on getting one in the future, I would do it sooner so that you don't have to relearn how to aim with sidespin later.
I switch to LD some years ago, and one thing I regret is that I can no longer play with the regular shafts that come with my custom cues, so I miss out on being able to experience the unique hit and feel of each cue.

Find someone good in your area to play with, they can tell you if the issue is bad equipment or something else. If you have been mostly around beginners or C players, or have learned to play on your own, you need to get some advice from a good player that can actually see how you play.

If you want a good medium low deflection cue, get a Players HXT cue or shaft. A whole cue would cost less than what a Predator or OB shaft costs and I think the feel of the hit with the Players shaft is better. It deflects a bit more, but the tradeoff is that it feels like a solid shaft, because it is. My favorite series from that is the HTXE series like this http://www.billiardwarehouse.com/cues/players/players_hxte5.htm since they have a wood to wood joint that has a better hit feel, at least to me.
