Okay, I have been in a few calcutta tournaments across the nation. Here recently I came across one that had the calcutta bidding in a different location so that it could be done "legally". So my question is this. Why do some places allow the bidding to happen in the house, and some want it done elsewhere, and what states allow this type of tourney and which states dont allow calcutta style, legally. I know it happens everywhere, just trying to figure out why in some states some bars do it there and some dont.

In Michigan it is illegal to side bet on anybody playing pool. If you are playing the game, you and your opponent can bet, but two guys sitting at the bar can not bet on the two people playing. It is considered side betting in this state if run a calcutta so you have to do the bidding off the property, and the money must change hands off the property.

This is I think a common situation (and is the case in ND). You may wager on yourself in a game of skill, but it is illegal to bet on someone else.

Of course in a lot of places, people don't ask the questions they don't really want to know the answer to, and they just do it.

I never did understand any of this. A calcutta is a must if you want to have a decent tournament. There are lots of things that are basically the same thing. What about bingos and things and what about when a church puts them on.......thats different though, yeah right. What it boils down to is the same thing as casinos scaming everyone, if the local, city, state or whatever government is not getting their share then its got to be against the law. I saw a special on 60 Minutes a while back about people betting on whether or not business's would make it or not, kinda like the stock market but all you do is take a gamble on whether or not a certain business will succed or fail ( same as betting on a pool player in a calcutta ) and this was all done legally.

This was in Texas.

In Texas, this is a bit intresting.

Texas law forbids calcutta's, but they could care less. Since 1958 there have been two aressts over calcutta's and ZERO prosecutions.

The problem in Texas is with the TABC {Texas alcohol and beverage control}.
They can't aresst you for holding a Calcutta, but they will call the local police and force a sting operation and then it is a night in jail.

Under TABC rules and guidelines they can fne the liquor licensee and shut the doors for a determined aount of time.

I run the Fast Eddies Tour and last year the owner of a competing pool room in San Angelo Tx. called the TABC and snitched us off hoping we would get closed and he would get some business in his piece of shit room. Thus we had to stop the calcuttas after I had argued with them for several weeks.

Although, a little Birdie whispered in my ear the other day and it looks like we are going to be able to start them again, quickly. I anxiously hope so for everyone's good.

like goosman said in michigan here, from what i've heard is, you cant run a calcutta if your place sells alcohol ? but i could be wrong or it may have changed, but, hell i dont know of any place that runs a GOOD tourny without a calcutta.....

I've only heard of one place getting busted for doing a calcutta and that was "the garage" in jackson, and i heard it was some guy who ratted them out cuz he was sour about something. so they lost thier liquor license for a month......

And the "Garage", now has a new name. Its called "Game on". I wonder if that has anything to do with it.

Seriously, these are the points our politicians wasted time on?

Really only matters when you get caught, but often name changes can get you out of it. Calling it an 'Auction' or something and no-one cares...
