Thanks for posting that, gpeezy. For those who don't know, Sam or Lil Sam, is Sam Gilmer who is the Professor's son. Looks like Lil Sam might be back in action. Good for him. Sam and his beautiful sisters are top notch people. The Professor and Cindy Gilmer raised them all well.

If you haven't been to the site, it's Southernbilliards.com.

I wish a Parimutuel was what tournaments used for the sweat action on players. I don't think it would be as great a payout as Calcutta's unless a long shot came in.

Just to let you know, it would be way less. Parimutuals genuinely only pay the winner. These work great in ring games because of the limited number of options. For example, Johnny Archer went for $500 at the last tournament I was at, Stevie Moore $260 and Larry Nevel $240. Other players accounted for roughly $600. This means the total Calcutta pot was $1500 after TD fees.

1. $900 - Larry Nevel ($3.75:$1 odds)
2. $400 - Stevie Moore ($1.53:$1 odds)
3. $200 - Jessie Middlebrooks ($90 buy $2.22:$1 odds)

Had this been a pari-mutual paying 3 places, I feel certain this would have been more in-line... Johnnie 15 people total wager $410. Stevie 4 people $100. Nevel 3 people $110. Assorted picks $80 at most.

1. $400 ($3.63:$1 odds, if Archer had won bettors would have lost money)
2. $150 ($2:$1)
3. $80 ($4:$1 if anyone even picked Jesse or TD would have kept)

Is this the kind of crap we're talking about...

The Open Division featured some exciting matches and several upsets. Early in the event Buddy Hall unexpectidly forfieted his match to Brian Jones when Hall was leading the race to 11 set by a score of 7-3. Hall stated the reason for his forfeit was "He misunderstood a ruling by the director, Mike Janis and it upset him. After that he didn't feel like playing anymore". Hall was fined a fee of $130 for his walking out on the match per Viking tour rules which Hall promptly paid along with giving an apology to everyone. In the semi finals Steve Rector defeated Shane McMinn 11-7 to get into the finals and face Daniel Neldner once again for the championship after losing to him in the hot seat match 11-6. Rector then won the 1st set in the true double elimination event 11-5 and 2nd set 11- 4 to take first.

I like a calcutta and, as most fiolks, am always looking for a good longshot. I is nice to buy a player at minimum bid and have them come in the money. I also like to throw a bone to any player that does win me money but didn't buy half of theirself.

Just recently went to a tournament where instead of a calcutta the entire field was set up on parimutual betting. Worked out pretty good. Naturally you are not going to win as much as if you had a darkhorse calcutta winner but you can own a piece of a favorite for what ever the minimum bid is, in this case $20. Spread a couple hundred between a couple of favorites and a couple of shortstops then throw in a long shot and you have some fun, and hopefully profitable, wagers.
